Ralph Lauren Valentine’s Day Fall 2013 surprise at NYFW (Photos)

Designer Ralph Lauren held his much-anticipated Ralph Lauren Fall 2013 collection fashion show for New York Fashion Week at St. John Center Studios on February 14, 2013. And for some of us it was the perfect Valentine’s Day present…

It’s as though Ralph Lauren has stepped back in time with this Ralph Lauren Fall 2013 collection that seems to favor perhaps the fashions of turn-of-the-century Russia in the early 1900’s.

Designs from this collection which seem to tap right into that period are the burgundy chiffon gown, which Lauren tops with a dark brown fur stole, a matching fur cap and accessorizes with over-the-elbow black gloves.

Similarly, an ivory dress is topped with a cream colored fur, and teamed with a matching fur hat and over-the-elbow cream gloves. Perhaps it’s just the Russian style hats and fur stoles that give these gowns a Russian feel…

To clarify the point, the strapless black gown with lots of frothy tiers isn’t overtly “Russian” but the black Russian hat again gives the ensemble a Russian flavor.

Nevertheless, the stunning Ralph Lauren gowns are worthy of any red carpet event and will undoubtedly prove themselves sought after by many a starlet or socialite.

There’s even a little bit of the 1920’s “flapper” in his black slip dress, embellished with a flower. But this Fall 2013 collection isn’t just about gowns…

Ralph Lauren dresses down a little with his black lace tunic, which he teams with fitted black pants and a knit head-hugger. Lauren even adds a concha style leather belt to one of his black gowns for a little Wild West flavor.

Long burgundy velvet bloomers are charming, teamed with a burgundy top and a charcoal hued jacket – again topped off with a Russian style black fur hat. The carpetbagger style handbag adds more drama.

A white ruffled poet’s blouse is teamed with fitted black pants tucked into knee-high black boots, a menswear inspired black coat, black bow at the neck and topped off with a black paperboy hat.

Grey velvet pants, tucked into ankle boots are teamed with an embroidered grey vest, a black shirt with a bow, several semi-precious stone garlands and that street-smart paperboy hat. Large dangling earrings lend more femininity to the ensemble to achieve the right balance of masculine and feminine.

Nautical charm is achieved with a black and white Breton style horizontally striped top, teamed with slim black pants and a cropped black jacket. A black shoulderbag, bow at the neck and black paperboy hat complete the sailor-inspired look.

Ralph Lauren Fall 2013 offers so many other autumnal and winter looks, including the full charcoal grey skirt, teamed with a sharp maroon cardigan and the green velvet skirt, teamed with burgundy and taupe and accessorized with a black beret and a thick brown leather belt.

There are also several velvet dresses, such as those in burgundy, purple and blue, which are accessorized with black berets.

So it seems that there’s a bit of everything in this varied Autumn/Winter 2013 collection from designer Ralph Lauren. Yet the use of velvet bloomers, ruffled poet shirts and concha belts takes one back to the 1980’s… No complaints here!
