Raleigh City Farm and Standard Foods to collaborate on urban harvest dinner

Vegetable lovers will soon experience Raleigh City's Farm's harvest bounty in a special dinner prepared by well-known Chef Scott Crawford, former Executive Chef of one of North Carolina's most prestigious hotels, The Umstead Hotel and Spa.

Standard Foods, under the culinary leadership of Crawford, announced last week that it is collaborating with Raleigh City Farm to host the second Annual Harvest Dinner at 6 p.m. on Oct.5 in Raleigh, N.C. The event is designed to raise awareness of the importance of the farm to chef movement. Crawford will prepare the cuisine from this fall's harvest found in the urban garden, which will be located next to his restaurant once he opens later this year.

According to event details, Crawford will prepare a "diverse selection of fall vegetables – raw, pickled, smoked, braised, and in desserts." Wines from neighboring retailer, Wine Authorities, will provide a selection of wines for evening from wineries that are known for its "farmer-grown wines."

“It’s an honor to raise awareness and funds for our neighboring urban farm, Raleigh City Farm, so that it can grow into its full potential in serving this community,” explained John Holmes, who will open Standard Foods later in the year with Chef Scott Crawford. Holmes is also responsible for revitalizing Person Street Plaza, where Raleigh City Farm is located at 800 North Blount Street.

“We’re especially proud of what we’ve accomplished, growing into a unique model of community-supported urban farming,” explained Christopher Rumbley, CEO of Raleigh City Farm. “The support of Raleigh’s extraordinary culinary community has been crucial and Standard Foods, opening directly beside the farm, has the potential to take it up another notch for all of us.”

Holmes says that Raleigh City Farm was a huge part of his vision in developing the Oakwood-Mordecai Business District and residential neighborhoods near Person Street Plaza.

“In order to create a vibrant and meaningful destination for this community, an urban farm was critical,” explained Holmes, who, from the beginning, designed a multifaceted irrigation system to support RCF. Holmes’ mission to create a center of synergistic partnerships is well underway, and will be fully realized when Standard Foods opens this fall. “At Standard Foods, we want to remove the barriers that stand between you and your food – and ultimately, create a new standard for shopping and enjoying healthy, local food in downtown Raleigh,” explained Holmes.

When Standard Foods opens this winter in Raleigh. The restaurant/market will have a strong connection to its neightbor, Raleigh City Farm. Guests will be available to view the farm while dining, and bounty from the crops in season will also be utilized.

Tickets for this special Raleigh City Farm dinner are $125 and will begin at 6 p.m. During the dinner, RCF will host a brief auction, including experiences such as a dinner prepared by Chef Crawford in his home, and a wine tasting for 10. All tickets can be purchased through www.raleighcityfarm.com beginning now.

At a VIP price, guests may attend a special farm tour at 5 p.m. before dinner along with a sampling of wine cocktails, snacks, an opportunity to meet and mingle with Chef Scott Crawford. The ticket for the special program and dinner is $200 per person.

TerraVita Food & Drink Festival, a premiere food festival in the South, held in Chapel Hill, N.C., is a sponsor of this dinner, and is offering a discount on tickets to the TerraVita Grand Tasting (Oct 11th) for those who attend this dinner. It will donate a percentage of sales from those tickets purchased back to Raleigh City Farm.

“This is exactly the kind of community project we want to support – one where sustainability has been a priority since day one – both on the part of Raleigh City Farm, and Standard Foods,” explained founder Colleen Minton, who is also featuring Standard Foods and Scott Crawford at TerraVita this year.
