While there are many reasons to raise rabbits, hopefully the majority of the breeders raise their chosen breed in hopes of improving and promoting that breed. If promotion of the rabbit industry is going to continue and continue to see positive growth, breeders are going to have to work together to promote and educate others about their breed.
One great way to promote education about rabbits, is to put together a welcome packet. Every time you sell a rabbit offer a welcome packet; this can be just about anything you wish your new customers to know. This is a great tool for first time owners, but great for veteran owners too, and maybe encourage them to start the same routine with their future customers.
Welcome packets can be very simple to start. First include your business card or something with your contact information. Also, type up a simple general care sheet with feeding instructions and care for the customer's new rabbit; just a simple, quick read, sheet works best. To encourage new buyers to learn more, about their breed, you can make copies of the ARBA (American Rabbit Breeders Association) membership form and the membership form for the breed they are buying. The information they receive from these national clubs can be very valuable to any rabbit enthusiast, whether they buy for pet or show.
Encourage your new buyers to contact you with any questions or concerns they may have after they go home. By educating new buyers and being available for follow-up questions, you are strengthening the overall knowledge of the rabbit industry and adding positive reinforcement for your own reputation.
