Age old question: do we raise our children in the City or the suburbs? What is the single most important deciding factor in answering that question? I'll bet you are still asking yourself that question even if your children are no longer children. Imagine if you will another opportunity to ask this question. Quickly now what would you say?
For one thing you would have to know where the parents are from, if they are from the City they might choose it or they might go the opposite direction and join the many brave souls who live in somewhat obscurity out of the fast pace of the City.
Pluses clearly are proximity, proximity, and proximity! Everything is at your finger tips, in walking distance when you are in the City. Need a slice of pizza at 2 AM-no problem, need a pharmacy item at midnight go to one of many 24 hour pharmacies available in the City. Hungry for Thai, Chinese, Itailian, Kreplach-no worries just zap it in your smartphone and off you go.
The advantages are numerous but if you look a little closer one might suggest the City life might be causing the impersonal, disinterested, lack of true connection relationships we are all forming. What with the screaming sirens, the horn honking, and the animals defecating and urinating in front of toney New York real estate one would believe this could be perfect. Now to convince yourself that paying $2000-??? for a box in a building that we affectionately call home is exactly what you had hoped and dreamed for.
What is it one gives up to have all of this convienience, perhaps individuality. It is easy to blend into the hustle bustle around you as you attempt to navigate the City. So no longer will you be asking, did Carey really have all that sex in the city? Or was that only attainable in the small and big screens we all watch for the escape they represent.
The debate rages on, no answers in sight. So I guess one has to put aside their desires for those of their children. Everyone just wants to be heard so here is my voice: City life is the one for me and mine.
