We are in for a full taste of spring this weekend. Highs could top out in the 60s in Columbus and even approach 70 degrees close to the Ohio River.
Your Friday morning will get off to a very rainy start. The umbrella will definitely come in handy through lunch time today. Some of the rain could be heavy at times especially during the early morning hours. The rain will taper off to light showers by 2 p.m. this afternoon and completely be to our east before 5 p.m. There could even be a few peaks of sun before dark this evening.
It will turn very mild behind the rain thanks to a strong warm front that will move through around midday. Temperatures will soar to nearly 60 degrees and stay in the 50s for all of tonight. If you have plans this evening, it will be mild and dry so take advantage of the great weather.
The warm temperatures will stick around for Saturday. In fact, it will turn even warmer as highs head for the middle 60s! Unfortunately, some rain could accompany the warm weather on Saturday. Showers will be scattered Saturday afternoon but the rain will turn widespread and heavy overnight into early Sunday morning.
Sunday will be a “backwards day” for the temperature. This means highs will actually occur very early before sunrise on Sunday and the temperature will fall throughout the day behind a cold front that will move through. The heaviest and most widespread rain will accompany the front early Sunday morning. However, some lingering showers will be possible throughout the afternoon and evening hours. Temperatures will fall into the lower 40s by sunset.
Much colder weather is on the way for next week. It does not look like any major arctic blasts of air will occur in the next five to seven days as of right now, but it could be on the horizon beyond that. A phenomenon called “sudden stratospheric warming” is currently taking place. This is when the temperature in the polar stratosphere warms very rapidly causing a disruption in the weather pattern over the polar region. The large polar vortex where the coldest air is concentrated often gets split apart and sends brutal cold air plunging south into the mid-latitude regions. There are strong indications that this will occur by the end of the month. The exact timing and magnitude of the coldest air is still uncertain, but true arctic air heading for the Ohio Valley is looking very likely.
