In one of the ten plagues of biblical fame, millions of frogs rained down from heaven, covering the land of Egypt. Since it's raining, and has been raining for weeks on end, it seems apropos that Frog's Leap Winery comes to Tresetti's World Caffé in Modesto this week for a special tasting.

On Tuesday 3/2, Tresetti's wine steward Paul, along with a representative from Frog's Leap, will pour a number of the winery's wares. The tasting is $16 per person.

Based in Rutherford, in the Napa Valley, Frog's Leap has been making wine since 1981, and became Napa's first certified organic winegrape grower. In addition to green winemaking, Frog's Leap focuses on terroir--nature's role in making fine grapes, and thus, fine wine. It produces Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Syrah, and its own blends: 'Rutherford,' 'Pink,' and 'Frögenbeerenauslese.'

Other tastings this week:

Sips Bistro has a new happy hour from 4-6 pm each Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. It offers $2 off wines by the glass, and $1 off their complete beer selection.

This week's 'Friday Night Flights' (3/5) will feature wines from Bokisch Vineyards, out of Lodi. Varietals for the flight will include Albariño, Garnacha, Graciano, and Tempranillo. Anyone with a taste for Old World wines made the New World way will enjoy this tasting. The cost is $10 per person, and is from 5-8 pm.

And on Saturday, Sips will host its 'ABC' event--Anything But Chardonnay. As the name implies, white varietals that aren't Chardonnay will be poured: Frascati, Moschofilero, Torrontes and Vermentino. This event runs from 2-8 pm, and costs $8 per person.

Tresetti's World Caffé is located at 927 11th Street in downtown Modesto; phone is (209) 572-2990.

Sips Bistro is located in the Crossroads Shopping Center, 901 N Carpenter Rd, Ste 39, in Modesto; phone is (209) 527-7477.

William Dotinga is, in addition to being a film snob, a wine snob as well. However, he rarely finds it necessary to spend more than $15 for a great bottle of wine, and usually spends less than $10. When not imbibing, he can be found watching classic cinema and working on his first novel. William...
