That some of the best fishing holes for giant billfish are found in Hawaii’s offshore waters is worldwide common knowledge. But when a recent media release from the state’s Department of Land and Natural Resources announced that June 16 will be the opening day for the 2012 fishing season for rainbow trout on Kauai, more than a few folks – both visitors and local - were sure to be surprised.
As rainbow trout are usually associated with cold mountain streams, to be able to catch them on a warm tropical island seems almost seems impossible. However, some 777 anglers caught 70 trout last year when the fishing was poor due to a temporary closing of the trout hatchery in 2009.
With the hatchery reopened and the restocking of trout in the Kokee Public Fishing Area in late 2011, the DLNR believes the fishing should be better this year.
Anglers may fish daily between sunrise and sunset from June 16 to September 30 in the Puu Lua Reservoir and the streams and ditch systems in the Kokee PFA.
The DLNR allows a daily bag limit of eight rainbow trout per licensed angler. And anglers must fish with only one pole and line, or with one line with one lure or one baited hook attached to one line. The use of treble hooks isprohibited.
Anglers are also advised that four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended for driving to all the main fishingareas.
Anglers must have a valid State of Hawaii freshwater game fishing license, which may be obtained atDLNR offices, selected fishing supply stores, license agents, or purchased online athttp://www.hawaii.gov/dlnr/darwhere more information, including the complete rules for fishing for rainbow trout is available. Also the Division of AquaticResources on Oahu may be called at 832-5009 for any questions anglers may have.
