The Annual Neptune City Day 5K was held on Saturday, August 2, 2014 in Neptune City, New Jersey. The race had an early start at 8 a.m. and the predicted rain came as expected. The rain did provide for some cool running favorable running conditions for the traditional summer event. The down pour did not dampen the runners’ spirits or the many spectators there to cheer the runners on.
The runners lined up near the registration area by the Neptune City First Aid Squad and just prior to the start “America the Beautiful” was sung. After getting the command to start they made their way from the start along a long steady incline. Then they turned into the local neighborhoods with a few ups and downs before a spring up hill to the finish by the park along the Shark River.
Coming in first was Kyle Clonan of Tinton Falls in a time of 17:22. Pat Ford of Neptune City a frequent winner of the event came in second this year in a time of 18:07. Rounding out the top three was Houston Migdon of Bradley Beach in a time of 18:14.
For the women it was Dactilla Booth of Long Branch breaking the tape in a time of 18:53. She was followed by Lauren Karabin (age 13) in 20:00 and then Marissa Allano of Neptune City in 20:06.
Many friends and relatives waited at the finish line under umbrellas carrying signs encouraging the runners on. Michael Campbell of Neptune City was there with his umbrella. Fred Rummel of Wall Township was there as were many local officials from Neptune City. Phil and Penny Hinck of Monmouth Beach again assisted at the start and finish. Pat Ford the second place finisher was satisfied with his race despite missing out on another win. Pat along with many others could be found later at Kelly's Tavern where many of the participants went to celebrate and more importantly dry off.
Coming up next weekend runners will be participating in the 11th Annual Asbury Park 5K.
