On Saturday, July 12, 2014, Marquette Park Golf Course (Marquette Park Golf Course is at 6700 S. Kedzie Avenue in Chicago, Ill.), site of the 32nd Senior Amateur, had many pools—casual water/standing water. Rain began falling Saturday morning at approximately 6 a.m. so it is very likely that this rainfall this golf tournament’s, second round.

For July 11-July 12, the 32nd Senior Amateur was on the CPD, tournament schedule. Park officials did not post any scores for Friday, which was this tournament’s first day, so maybe they cancelled this tournament because of lack of contestants. Nevertheless, Chicago Park District officials had not posted any scores by 5:20 p.m. on Saturday. This leads to two possibilities: this tournament never occurred or there was only one round.

Stroke play was supposed to be the scoring format. In this format, pars are much better than double bogeys. Triple bogeys are much worse than pars. Double eagles are much, much better than pars, but they are extremely rare. (Double eagles would be scores of three under par on par five holes; golfers sink their putts with their second shots. Marquette Park Golf Course has two, par five holes—the third (458 yards from the Blue tees) and the seventh (485 yards from the Blue tees).

On Saturday in the late afternoon, the golf course was closed. Saturated grass was around the first and ninth holes. Puddles covered part of some cart paths. Stagnant water in at least one sand bunker at the ninth hole spoke metaphorically, it said, “You cannot play this hole.”

On this date, part of Kedzie Avenue between Marquette Boulevard and 71st Street was closed. (At approximately 6 p.m., Chicago’s Water Department allowed traffic to resume flowing along Kedzie Avenue between Marquette Boulevard and 71st Street.) The Marquette Park pond that extends from east to west underneath Kedzie Avenue, and which establishes the background for the ninth hole, overflowed its banks.

Chicago’s Park District does not usually reschedule cancelled tournaments. Therefore, the next Senior Amateur golf tournament will be in 2015. In 2013, Steven Mora won the 31st Senior Amateur tournament.
