“Mortal Kombat X” Creative Director Ed Boon promised a “shocking” character reveal for the upcoming PS4, Xbox One and PC fighting game at EVO 2014 on Saturday and he delivered. The shock factor was in the literal sense though and not the metaphorical sense as Raiden was shown to be returning and he’s bringing three fighting styles with him. And yes, he also has a ludicrously violent, over-the-top Fatality move.
Raiden joins Scorpion and Sub-Zero in “Mortal Kombat X” as some of the few returning characters to be revealed so far. The game will feature mostly new characters as its moves the series timeline to 25 years after the events of the 2011 reboot.
Each character in “Mortal Kombat X” will include three different fighting styles. As shown in the reveal video from EVO 2014 (via AGB), Raiden starts with the Thunder God style that focuses on electrocution combos. Displacer is the second style revealed and goes the teleportation route making Raiden a difficult foe to keep track of on the stage. The third and final style is Storm Lord and revolves around setting lightning traps.
As for Raiden’s Fatality move, it’s just as violent as the moves shown for other characters in “Mortal Kombat X” so far. Raiden grabs hold of his opponents head and electrocutes him until his eyeballs pop out and his head rips off before flying into the air where Raiden shocks the head one more time, causing it to explode, for good measure.
“Mortal Kombat X” is currently scheduled to be released sometime in 2015. It will be available for the PS4, Xbox One and PC with a port being made for the PS3 and Xbox 360.
