Two Olympic skiers were on the slopes of Lake Tahoe earlier this week. Their intent was to show that Lake Tahoe ski resorts are worth a visit despite the lack of “real” snow.
Olympic gold-winning medalist Jonny Moseley and Olympic freestyle skier and alpine ski racer Daron Rahlves were providing a “Tahoe Sampler.” Moseley was skiing at his home resort at Squaw Valley, while Rahlves was doing the same at Sugar Bowl, his mountain of choice.
The two skied with guests during the day as a way to show that there is skiable terrain at Lake Tahoe resorts, thanks to manmade snow operations. And it was also a way to help promote “Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month,” which most Lake Tahoe ski resorts are participating.
“Significant capital improvements at area ski resorts coupled with optimal cold temperatures at night have North Lake Tahoe snowmaking machines delivering with nine of our resorts open, 51 lifts cranking and 88 trails for pointing those boards downhill,” said Andy Chapman, spokesperson for the North Lake Tahoe Resort Association. “The snow along with the fair weather is also well suited for beginners, especially with January’s deep discounts.”
Both Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows are celebrating Learn to Ski and Snowboard Month through January 29 by offering affordable beginner ski and ride packages for $39/person (ages 13 above), which includes a half-day lesson (10 a.m. – 1 p.m.) with ski professionals, lift ticket and equipment rentals.
Also on the North Tahoe, Northstar California, Homewood, Diamond Peak and Sugar Bowl are all offering deals to for skiing and snowboarding lessons. On Tahoe’s south shore, Heavenly has a nice cost-saving learn to ski or ride package and so does Kirkwood.
