Radio Shack goes back to the ‘80s with pop-culture-filled Super Bowl ad

“The ‘80s called… they want their store back.” That was the opening line for Radio Shack’s 2014 Super Bowl ad, which gave viewers a major throwback Sunday when a mob of 1980s icons ransacked an outdated Radio Shack store. The commercial featured just about every ‘80s pop culture reference imaginable.

On Feb. 2, People magazine identified the list of the commercial’s guest stars, which included everyone from Olympic gymnast Mary Lou Retton to “Friday the 13th” villain Jason Voorhees.

In addition to those ‘80s icons, Cliff Clavin from “Cheers,” wrestler Sgt, Slaughter, the California Raisins, Alf, Twisted Sister front man Dee Snider, Kid ‘N play, and even the “Clash of the Titans” owl Bubo appeared in the ad. (You can see the full list of cameos here.)

According to the Wall Street Journal, the electronics retailer was a big winner with ad, along with Super Bowl ad Chrysler and Anheuser-Busch, who frequently score well with their game day spots. Branding expert Dean Crutchfield told the WSJ of the Radio Shack ad: "It's great to see a brand make fun of itself.”

Speaking of making fun, the commercial’s actors know how to do that too. After the ad aired, wrestler Hulk Hogan, tweeted: “@RadioShack commercial was fun to film, everyone from the 80's has to dress like they looked back then, I just showed up, nothing's changed. HH.”
