A radio host has been tricked by a fake photo and story posted on the satirical online news website “The Onion.” The picture in question showed an image of three identical drones flying fairly low over President Barack Obama’s 2013 Inauguration at Washington, D.C.
The headline for the article was “Obama Begins Inauguration Festivities With Ceremonial Drone Flyover.”
According to Yahoo, KFAI host Andy Driscoll was tricked into believing that the photo may have actually been real. On Driscoll’s Facebook page, the host is said to have acknowledged the image by writing the word “ugly” underneath it as a caption.
His single comment encouraged others to join in on the debate, as well. Afterward, Driscoll is said to have re-entered the online conversation by adding, “Never seen three in a cluster formation like that, but they're obviously scanning the crowd for potential trouble—all monitored by a site in Las Vegas.”
Upon learning the both the photo and story was fake, Driscoll appeared to acknowledge (or simply attempt to save face) that the image was fraudulent by writing, “There's a reason the Onion can make satire out of this photo, which was obviously doctored to give us a laugh (ceremonial drone flyover, indeed! HA!), is that satire is a stretch of the truth."
What do you think? Do you feel it’s easy for anyone to look at that photo and be tricked into believing it’s real? Voice your thoughts below!
