Who wudda thunk that a radio show on gardening would be so popular? Nick Federoff, that’s who. His “Nick Federoff on Gardening” is broadcast on 250 stations nationwide and is number 1 in America. How does he do this without the usual video associated with gardening shows?
“I have a knack of describing things,” Federoff told Examiner. “I have a stack of letters from blind people who say, ‘I love your program because it makes me see.’” He said even some folks who say they can’t stand gardening like his show.
We met Federoff at Fiesta Parade Floats on Saturday morning. He was doing a program on the 2013 Miracle-Gro Rose Parade float, “Everyone Grows!” and interviewing float designer Raul Rodriguez. As the “Official Rose and Flower Care Partner” of the Tournament of Roses, Miracle-Gro is entering a float and sponsoring the post-parade Showcase of Floats.
Federoff is Miracle-Gro’s official “garden guru” and will be available with gardening tips and activities at the Showcase of Floats. He shared a few tips with your purple-thumbed Tournament of Roses Examiner about California native plants.
“One of the Number 1 reasons California natives die is that people take care of them too much and overwater,” he said. Assured that this was not the problem in our yard, he added, “The first year needs as much care as other plants.” Bingo!
California is a great place for a gardener, though, because as Federoff said, “It’s the only place in the U.S. where within a 1 ½-hour radius, you have every single climate condition.”
