Radical Lincoln Concept C: Can classic style and prestige work as a hatchback?
Lincoln has been a sleeping giant for the last several years. But no more, as Ford Motor Company has caught fire with exciting new products for 2010, Lincoln has come back to life with a revamped line-up of cars that boast classic style, innovative engineering and American-style luxury. You can read about those changes by clicking here.
The radical Lincoln Concept C offers the best proof yet that this division is willing to radically rethink its place in the 21st Century autoscape.
Recently displayed at The Grove shopping mall in Los Angeles, the futuristic concept drew raves from passers by who seemed impressed by its vast interior space, as large as that of a full-sized car, contained in a compact exterior. Not since the unlamented demise of AMC's Pacer has a U.S. automaker dared to tread the shark-infested waters between Big Car Interior and Small Car Exterior. But Lincoln appears to have nailed the layout this time, producing a real winner with its Concept C.
Americans have been notoriously snobbish about hatchback cars, as they consider them cheap econo-boxes. Europeans don't agree and prefer hatchbacks over sedans due to their greater utility. More premium cars are appearing with hatchbacks, so perhaps Americans are getting over this hang-up. The MINI Cooper's success has proven that Americans will pay extra for a premium small hatchback if it's done right. The style and interior room of Lincoln's exciting Concept C would eliminate objections to this practical bodystyle as it positioned the brand as a leader in the 21st Century.
A shout out to the designers who created the "C" at Ford's Irvine, California studio: Jeremy Leng styled the exterior. Andre Markevich designed the innovative interior. And Matt Edwards created the instrument panel with its amazing connectivity and interaction.
