Rachel Alexandra delivers bouncing bay boy

Stonestreet Farms is raising a toast to the darling of their farm, Rachel Alexandra, as the 2009 Horse of the Year nurses her newborn bay colt. The foal’s name has not yet been revealed.

And, like his superfast dam, the youngster is ahead of schedule, arriving almost 10 days before his due date. The energetic baby horse bears a star on his forehead, resembling the imprint on his mother’s famous inverted exclamation point facial marking.

Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d'Oro x Lotta Kim by El Prado) was bred to Curlin (Smart Strike x Sheriff’s Deputy) on February 21st at Kentucky’s Lane’s End Farm. Curlin was Horse of the Year in 2007 and 2008.

The popular mare spent her nearly 11-month pregnancy at Stonestreet’s farm in Lexington, Kentucky.

Both Rachel Alexandra and Curlin are former Preakness Stakes winners, owned by the late Jess Jackson’s Stonestreet Thoroughbred Holdings/Stonestreet Farm.

“Rachel delivered her colt at 2:40 p.m. [on January 22nd],” a Stonestreet Farms online statement proudly proclaimed. “We are over the moon!”

What will Stonestreet name Rachel Alexandra’s much-anticipated colt?

Usually, Thoroughbred racehorse foals’ names incorporate elements from the monikers of both sides of their pedigrees. Thoroughbred names must not exceed 18 characters.

Here are a few possibilities we might suggest. (Of course, Stonestreet Farms will announce their own title for the youngster. Most likely, they’ve already picked an appropriate name.)

  • Alex Round the Bend
  • Alex Strikes Gold
  • Cur Ray Jess
  • Curlexandra
  • Curlin Alexandra (although Curlin Alexander is already taken)
  • Curly Ray
  • Curly’s Gold
  • Just Chellin’
  • Ray Strikes Gold

And my two personal favorites:

  • Curly Alex
  • Railin’ (particularly if Stonestreet tags Rachel Alexandra’s jockey Calvin (Bo-Rail) Borel to ride the colt when he’s ready to race.

(Alexander TheGreat is already taken, but something along those lines seems apt as well.)

What would you call the brand-new and very promising bay colt of Rachel Alexandra by Curlin?
