A spill occurred at Laurel Park over the weekend when one of the horses collapsed in a race and another horse was caught up in the spill, falling and dumping his rider.
It was the ninth race. The horses were running full tilt when Itzmin collapsed and went down. His jockey, Wesley Ho 25, was hurt during the fall of his horse. As a result of the fallen horse and rider, Dogwoods Barlo attempted to avoid the spill, tossing his jockey Alex Cintron.
Lt. Jack Beall, spokesman for Anne Arundel County Fire Department said that the injured Ho was taken by ambulance to Laurel Regional Hospital for treatment of his injuries. It did not appear that these injuries were life-threatening.
Cintron was taken to Prince George’s Hospital for a thorough medical evaluation. His mount, Dogwoods Barto, was not injured during the spill.
According to Mike Gathagan, the spokesman for the Maryland Jockey Club, said Itzmin was euthanized.
Gathagan said, “It’s not an everyday occurrence that somebody fractures their arm. But certainly, unfortunately, spills happen.”
Another horse in that race was Bullet Catcher. He had made news in January for escaping the park and running along Route 1 for over 1 1/2 mile. That escape had caused some concern and notoriety.
