Races in and around Atlanta

The tortoise might not always win the race, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t something in it for him, too. Road races provide avid runners and novices alike with a chance to see how they measure up against the competition and an official setting in which to improve their personal best times. Races can also be a source of motivation—the goal toward which to strive during daily workouts.

Many races offer interesting courses—allowing runners to ditch the monotony of their daily routes. At the finish line, competitors are often awarded with accolades, food, drinks, and fun. An often festival-like atmosphere allows every runner to celebrate his accomplishments in finishing the race. The applause from cheering spectators along the course can motivate runners during the race, and during future workouts.

This weekend alone there are about ten races in the Atlanta area, ranging from the 9th Annual Tar & Turf Four Mile & Mile Health Run in Morrow (770-961-4006) on Saturday, August 22, to the XTERRA Georgia Trail Run Series Rock Hawk 5K/Half Marathon in Eatonton on Sunday.

Many races, such as The Tar & Turf Four Mile & Mile Health Run, donate registration fees to charities. The Tar & Turf race donates all proceeds to the Department Children’s Charities. It is run mostly on trails and through the Reynolds Nature Preserve, and finishers are then treated to breakfast at Waffle House.

  • the Flat Get It 5K and Fun Run in Villa Rica (678-873-6720)
  • the Pound Out Polio 5K in Buford (404-583-1595)
