As the weather cools down, the number of race opportunities in Southwest Florida increase. November 2011 offers up several races, including some less common distances. This article will cover races in the first half of the month.

November 5: Polly’s Run for Life 5K- This race is named in memory of Polly Robinson, a teacher at Gulf Middle School who died of breast cancer last year. This race, which is scheduled for an 8:30 am start, will be run inside of Lakes Park. (Click here for a map), so the course will be a reasonably flat one. This event benefits the American Cancer Society and Gulf Middle School. Click here to register online.

November 11: Midpoint Madness 5K- Watch the date on this one, it’s on a Friday, commemorating Veterans Day. The race, which will begin at 7:00 pm, starts on the Colonial Blvd flyover at McGregor Blvd. Runners will cross the Caloosahatchee to the Cape Coral side of the river, then return to finish at Royal Palm Square shopping center. This means you get to “enjoy” the long hump on the bridge twice. The race benefits the Lee County YMCA. Pre-race parking will be at Royal Palm Square. (Click here for a map). The race will also have a special category for veterans 49 years old and younger and one for vets 50 and older. Click here to register online.

November 11: Sunset & Suds 5K-This is another Friday evening race. This event is a benefit for the Rotary Club of Naples North. It is scheduled for a 5:30 pm start, beginning at Vanderbilt Beach Rd and Vanderbilt Dr. (Click here for a map) The race will finish on the beach. Click here to register online.

November 12: Free to Breathe Southwest Florida 5K- This race is in Charlotte County and benefits the National Lung Cancer Partnership. The 5K, which is scheduled to start at 8:15 am, will start and finish at the Charlotte Sports Park. (Click here for a map) The flat course will be in and around the park in mostly undeveloped areas. November 13: Naples on the Run 20K- This isone of the older races around the area. The 20K race (12.4 miles) is scheduled to start at 7:00 am at US 41 and Mooringline Dr. (click here for a map) The top 5 male and female finishers, as well as the top Masters finisher, will receive free entry to the Naples half marathon in January 2012.
