House Rabbit Society (HRS), an international nonprofit animal rescue and education organization, along with Petfinder are celebrating rabbits during February which has been designated as "Adopt-a-Rescued-Rabbit Month." Have you finally decided to add a bunny to your household? Or – do you already have a bunny and would like to know how to better care for your “hoppy” friend. If so, you may want to take a class on bunny care taught by the experts at your local House Rabbit Society Chapter. Click here to find a House Rabbit Society Chapter in your area. Many of these chapters offer rabbit care classes throughout the year. The websites also contain an abundance of resources on rabbit care.
Anyone in metro Atlanta interested in adopting a rabbit or learning more about rabbit care is invited to attend one of the classes offered by the North Georgia House Rabbit Society (NGHRS). NGHRS offers both beginners (Bunny 101) and advanced (Bunny 201) classes. All classes will be held at the NGHRS Shelter – The Bunny Center, 2280 Shallowford Road, Marietta GA 30066.
Bunny 101 covers everything you need to know to make living with a house rabbit easy, healthy and fun. Click here for a list of dates for the classes and registration information. A $5.00 donation for the class covers the cost of handout materials and a healthy treat package for your bunny.
Bunny 201 will teach you how to give your bunny a home health exam, take a temperature, administer fluids and oral medication, and how to give injections. You will also learn what to include in your home health toolkit and learn when you can treat an illness and when professional help is needed. If you want to add a rabbit to your family, there are local shelters and rabbit rescue groups that have many that need homes. Rabbits are the third most frequently relinquished pet at animal shelters. Wait until a month or two after Easter and you will likely find several ex-Easter bunnies to choose from at your local shelter who may otherwise be euthanized due to lack of interested adopters.
