A controversial R. Kelly and Aaliyah secret marriage is going to be explored in a new biopic coming to national television, titled “Aaliyah: Princess of R&B.” The upcoming movie is set to star Zendaya Coleman of Disney Channel fame as Aaliyah, sharing the talented young woman’s life, her incredible story into the world of music, and her untimely death. MSN TV News reports this Monday, June 23, that one of the primary focuses of the film will be allegations of the singer illegally marrying R. Kelly back in 1994, and the tumultuous relationship that ensued between them.
Many loyal fans were excited to learn that a Lifetime Network biopic was in the works for the deceased R&B artist, Aaliyah. R. Kelly, Aaliyah secret marriage rumors have been confirmed to be investigated in the new film, as there have been repeated allegations over the years that the two stars were married over two decades ago. Aaliyah would have been only 15 years old at the time of the nuptials, while Kelly was a full 12 years older — at age 27— when the reported union took place.
The beloved princess of rhythm and blues — which seems to be a very fitting title for the upcoming biopic — adamantly denied any such marriage reports for her whole life. However, it was revealed that an illegal ceremony had in fact very possibly taken place, as a seemingly authentic marriage certificate was brought into the public light several years ago. The legal document stated that Aaliyah was actually 18 at the time of her secret marriage to R. Kelly, though she was only a minor in reality. (The late singer’s parents were said to have had the nuptials annulled sometime in the past.)
According to Yahoo! Music News, the Lifetime movie is based on a widely popular biography of the artist, confirmedly going to be called, “Aaliyah: Princess of R&B.” It will feature Disney Channel Star Zendaya Cole and is set to begin filming this summer. Although no official release date for the biopic has been revealed, it is anticipated that the television movie will premiere in late fall 2014 once production is complete.
In addition to confronting the issue of the secret matrimony with mentor R. Kelly at only age 15, the biopic is also said to share Aaliyah’s story into the world of music and her life journey — starting from the young age of 10 until her death. The singer was tragically killed in a sudden plane crash back in 2001. She was only 22 years old at the time.
"Aaliyah’s personal and professional relationship with R. Kelly will be explored with care in the film as we set out to depict her life with the utmost respect," executive producer Debra Martin Chase told the paper. "Above all else, it’s our hope to inspire an entirely new generation with her music and larger-than-life talent."
