When the 2013 Oscar nominations were announced on Thursday morning child actress and “Beasts of the Southern Wild” breakout star Quvenzhané Wallis made history. At the age of 9 she becomes the youngest nominee in the best actress category. Wallis faces Jennifer Lawrence (“Silver Linings Playbook”), Naomi Watts (“The Impossible”), Jessica Chastain (“Zero Dark Thirty”) and Emmanuelle Riva (Amour”) when the awards are handed out on February 24.
Before Wallis' Oscar nod actress Keisha Castle-Hughes held the honor for youngest best actress nominee at age 13 for her role in “Whale Rider”. Wallis’ film “Beasts of the Southern Wild” is up for several Academy Awards including best picture where it will contend with the Steven Spielberg-directed “Lincoln” which leads all films with a total of 12 nominations.
