Breastfeeding didn't used to be an obstacle to writing until I got a standing desk. In all honesty, I can still breastfeed just by leaning forward a bit. My three-year-old nursling comes along, tugs on my shirt, and I lean over without breaking stride.
But this isn't one of the romanticizes images we see outside the personal blogs, or briefly on Facebook, of quirky, dedicated breastfeeding moms who are willing to post such nursling antics. When we see breastfeeding images, they're more likely to feature a tiny baby in his or her mother's arms.
But I love the gymnastic nursers, the moms and babies who seamlessly integrate breastfeeding into their lives. I remember my sister's amazement when I was frying eggs with an eighteen-month-old nursling tucked under one arm, nursing away. The same child has a thing for upside-down nursing.
I remembered a blog photo of a mom nursing her baby while she played guitar. Years later, it was surprisingly easy to find - Women in Charge: Breastfeeding Sing-a-Long.
Just the other day I saw one on Facebook, along with scores of comments in poor taste. Nonetheless, I liked the photo, an seriously, with my knowledge of nurslings, the child was probably just taking advantage of a convenient situation - nekkid hippie breastfeedin’ yoga.
The Facebook album Breastfeeding Around the World has lots of beautiful everyday breastfeeding that we're unlikely to see in Western cultures.
