Quick Tips: How to maximize space in kids rooms for a few bucks & minimal effort

We all seem to need more room in our kids' rooms, no matter how small or large our houses are. Our space is particularly cramped... and I've tried lots of options to fix the problem. But my best solution so far was really cheap! The answer lies in your local public college. No, not sending your little one off early.

But public colleges and universities have "surplus" departments where you can buy almost anything you can find at a college - think dorms and offices- for really cheap. The university surplus is where my kids' room space saver comes from. For $26, I picked up two solid wood adjustable bunk beds complete with heavy duty wire frame.

Now you're thinking - good deal, but bunk beds aren't very clever. Agreed. But I didn't use the bunk beds as bunk beds. After purchasing purple paint for a nice girly look (3 cans at $3 each), I fashioned these adjustable bunk beds into double loft beds! Underneath the beds, we moved chests of drawers, toy bins and bean bags. Now my daughters shared room is also their play room!

Not a bad use of $18 per kiddo for double the play space and that big girl feel for each of them with no one having to sleep on the bottom bunk!
