I recently attended an advisory board meeting at ITT Technical Institute in Greentree, PA. During the outbreak session, the topic about the best time to schedule an interview came up.
I don't really think about the best or worst times to go on interview and after the conversation I thought it's a great strategy for job seekers to know about. Someone mentioned they thought that scheduling an interview earlier in the morning is best. They think it's a great way to catch a decision maker before their day gets busy and could avoid any emergency meetings or situations coming up later in the day that could distract the interviewer.
While researching this topic online, I came across an article titled 5 Tips: Best Times to Schedule An Interview posted on glassdoor.com. The first tip the article lists is "avoid early morning meetings." The reason for that tip is that even though it's a great time of day to hold someone's attention, if it's too early, they could be distracted with the drive into work or even with something that happened at home before leaving for work.
The other 4 tips include:
- Avoid the last meeting of the workday
- Avoid pre or post-lunch meetings
- Avoid right before or right after the holidays
- Try to find out the best times for the interviewer
My personal thought on this topic: I think we all know that in reality, there isn't a perfect time to schedule an interview because life throws us changes all the time without any notice. I like the morning between the hours of 10:00 and 11:00 to schedule meetings for myself. It gives me enough time to have my coffee and get settled in for the day and it's before the day starts unfolding unexpected situations. If you have any control over the time, use your best judgement. A lot of times we don't have a choice on the interview time, so we have to take what we can get and hope for the best!
