CHARLOTTETOWN, 12:14 p.m.: All of the junior and senior women came in and did a one touch on floor for about five minutes, and have now disappeared back into the training gym. Tumbling looked good -- Sarah Flett threw her double layout, Maegan Chant threw her double layout and Jessica Savona did perhaps the best Arabian double pike/layout I've ever seen. Then they all left.
12:52 p.m.: OK, here we go...the judges have marched out, followed by a couple of mounties just for good measure. The competition will begin in just a minute.
Rotation one: Senior women on bars, junior women on floor, men on vault
Natalie Vaculik, floor: Her music has an eerie beginning and then breaks into something pretty and lyrical..double pike to good landing. 1.5 to front layout full, excellent. Where Natalie sets herself apart, of course, is in her dance. She is so elegant...Double tuck. Switch, switch side. This is a very nice routine...2.5 twist with a step forward.
Scott Morgan, vault: Tsuk double full, step back. 15.5.
Vivi Babalis, floor: Double pike, ,step back. 1.5 to front layout to single stag jump. Switch, switch side half. Tourjete half. Double turn. Another athlete with tons of potential...Front layout full. Double tuck, too far forward and falls on her stomach. Too bad. Still, a lot of promise here.
Jayd Lukenchuk, vault: DTY, stuck! Awesome job. Jayd looks pumped. He should be!
Jordyn Pedersen, floor: Full in tuck, pulls it around. Front layout, front layout full. Movie chase scene music. Switch, switch side. Switch half to the corner for her third pass...Double tuck, stuck. Double pike, little step back as an afterthought. Nice routine for the 2010 Novice champ, who made the jump to junior this year...
Brandon O'Neill, vault: Tsuk 2.5, big step off the mat. 15.4.
Sabrina Tomassini, floor: Cirque du Soleil music. Tourjete full to open. Full in tuck, well done. Double Arabian with a small hop. Tomassini can tumble. Switch side half. Double turn, steps back and will get credit for only 1.5. PUnch front to double full, little hop. Double tuck, stuck. Nice routine
Casey Sandy, vault: DTY, too low and puts his hands down on the mat.
Maegan Chant, floor: Double layout, piked down and put her hands down on the floor. She's been piking all week at the end, and now she's tired, I think. Piked full in. Fast paced music. Punch front to double tuck. Double pike to close.
Matthieu Csukassy, vault: DTY with a big step back, but lots of talent here. 15.3.
Victoria Moors, floor: The double double tuck! Big step back, but whatever. She is the only Canadian ever to do that...1.5 to double tuck, good. A lot of dance to "Roxanne" before her triple full. And a double pike to end.
Ken Ikeda, vault: DTY, stuck. Not the height of Lukenchuk's, but he's gotta be happy with that all the same.
Kaitlyn Hofland, floor: Double tuck, steps OOB. Switch, Tourjete half. Drums piece. 1.5 to front layout, good. Sits down last pass, a 2.5 twist. Too bad.
Simon Porter, vault: Handspring front layout double full, sat down.
Stefanie Merkle, floor: Switch half. Full in tuck, stuck. Salsa music. Triple full, very well done. Switch, switch side half. 1.5 to double full. Double turn. Front aerial. Double tuck. The highlight of this routine is definitely her tumbling.
Hugh Smith, vault: Tsuk 2.5, tiny little hop. Very nice.
Rotation two: Men on pommel, senior women on bars, junior women on beam
Anderson Loran, pommel horse: Hit routine! Great start for him.
Ti Liu, bars: Hecht mount, toe stalder to toe blind to Jaeger, really good. bailt o toe toe full that becaomes toe 1.5, kips off and does a half turn and a banana handstand before her Ray...1.5 layout dismount. Whew! Well, she didn't come off...
Jayd Lukenchuk, pommel: Falls off at the end of the routine but gets back up and does his dismount and salutes with a big "Ta-da!" pose that makes everyone laugh. The TV camera got that one.
Krishna Yemany, bars: Jump to high, blind to Jaeger, good, toe stalder to bail, over on handstand and has to kip off, inprovising...Ray to high, full turn out of the handstand, blind and double front, fought to get it around but had to sit down in the end.
Dominique Nadeau, bars: Jump to high, Shushunova release, catches her foot but doesn't stop. Bail to toe shoot, almost comes off on blind but OK, Markelov, full turn, double pike with a step.
Jackson Payne, pommel: Hit routine!
Hugh Smith, pommel: Hit routine!
Silvia Colussi-Pelaez, bars: Jump to high, full to Tkatchev, stalder to bail, stalder half to front stalder, lovely, hecht to high, giants, double layout with a step forward.
Tariq Dowers, pommel horse: Made it through, a few form breaks here and there.
Coralie Leblond, Chartrand, bars: Hecht mount, clear hip to blind to Markelov, giant full to half to bail to toe hecht (a bit of legs), layout 1.5 dismount.
Hailee Westney, beam: Front pike somie, nice. She has such beautiful lines on this event. Bhs, layout, lovely. Illusion, really nice. Off on side aerial, too bad! It was great until then. Dismount is gainer layout.
Zachary Clay, pommel: Comes off early in the routine.
Bianca Dancose-Giambattisto, bars: This is her event...stalder to Maloney to bailto toe hecht to high, blind to pike Jaeger, caught on her fingertips, toe stalder to full turn to giants and Arabian double dismount with a step! Her family here in the crowd are delighted.
Makinli Handley, beam: Bhs, layout. Wolf, split full, nice! Don't see that too often. Off on side aerial. Side somie. Back tuck. Didn't see the dismount.
Ken Ikeda, pommel: Speaking of his event...arms collapse as he goes to handstand after a hit routine and he kind of falls out of the handstand and over. Whoops.
Nicole Chow, beam: Press handstand mount. Switch ring, very nice. Switch. Korbut salto, another skill you don't see too often. Off on bhs, layout.
Dominique Pegg, bars: Toe stalder, Maloney to bail legs apart, toe hecht to high, blind to Jaeger, toe stalde half, giants, double layout with a hop/step. Nice routine for Dominique.
Casey Sandy, pommel: Hit routine.
Jordyn Pedersen, beam: Press mount. Full turn in wolf position. Switch, split. Punch front. Bhs, layout, a little bit of leg form but no wobbles. Side aerial. Roundoff, double tuck, just a step to the side.
Shae Zamardi, bars: Jump to high, tie stalde rfyll to Tkatchev. Pak to clear hip half and comes off. Overbalanced the handstand. Markelov. Double Arabian dismount.
Casey Carvalho, beam: A promising young gymnast here...Double turn, might have touched the beam but I don't think so. Bhs, layout, a little bend at the waist but doesn't fall. Back tuck, back pike. Switch, scissone. Side aerial, great. Made her dismount, but I didn't see it.
Vivi Babalis, beam: Front aerial, Gainer layout. Something else into a back pike. Looks very aggressive, and moving well. Full turn with leg up. Front pike somie. This is very impressive...Side somie with legs straight, another great landing. Roundoff, double tuck with a small step. Great routine!
Victoria Woo, beam: Side somie. Front aerial, bhs. Back tuck. Switch, scissone. Side somie with legs straight, a little wobble. Double full with a hop/shuffle back.
Natalie Vaculik, beam: Jump to scale. Switch half. Front aerial. Bhs, layout with a little hesitation. Switch, back tuck. Wolf, scissone. Switch side. Full turn. Off on side aerial. Too bad! She's as pretty on beam as on floor.
Rotation three: Men on rings, senior women on vault, junior women on bars
Soctt Morgan, rings: Hit routine judging by the applause.
Eliane Kulzyk, vault: Handspring front pike, lovely! Just a tiny hop, but what great position in the air. Second vault is a Tsuk layout with a hop.
Jayd Lukenchuk, rings: Sits down double pike front dismount, not even close. Not a good day for him so far, but he's young. He'll learn.
Emma Sibson, vault: Very good FTY, just a small shuffle on the landing. Emma had a distal tibia fracture and just began doing gymnastics again less than two months ago, so for her to come back and be here is a feat in itself. Second vault is a gorgeous launched handspring front pike half, landed well with a small step back. Good for Emma!
Jackson Payne, rings: Hit routine, again by the applause. Looks like he stuck his dismount, too.
Taylor Ricci, vault: FTY, step back. Second vault is a roundoff, half on, front tuck off, but she overrotates and has to put her hands down.
Coralie Leblond-Chartrand, vault: Yurchenko 1.5, sits down. Just a little too underrotated. She did a great one in warmup...second vault: Handspring front tuck with a step.
Hugh Smith, rings: Planche. Double pike front to planche, a bit of swing in the rings.
Vivia Babalis, bars: Jump to high, bail to toe hecht to high, giants, full, blind, double front. Some slightly messy legs occasionally in that routine.
Sarah Flett, vault: The 21-year-old from Manitoba here. FTY, hop back. Second vault is handspring front tuck, well done with a small hop forward.
Elise Bolger, bars: Hit routine with good full twisting double tuck dismount.
Curtis Graves, rings: A tall guy whose father was a pro football player, I believe...very powerful body, as you'd expect. Hit routine to big applause.
Bianca Jordaan, vault: FTY, very good. Handspring front tuck half second vault with a step back. Wonderful height on both vaults.
Victoria Woo, bars: Misses a handstand and does a half turn to cover ("No!" cries one of the girls, who I suspect is her sister Rose) but recovers well and does a nice double layout dismount.
Maegan Chant, bars: Close and legs apart on her Geinger...bail to clear hip, not shot high enough and falls. Toe hecht to high, full turn, giants, slightly scary full twisting double tuck dismount because she twists so slowly in the tuck, but she makes it.
Matthieu D'Amour, rings: The local kid, a gymnast from Prince Edward Island's Island Gymnastics Academy, gets a huge ovation at the beginning of his routine, and a huge cheer at the end as well.
Gabby May, vault: FTY, very well done with just a small step on the landing. Second vault is roundoff, full twist on, back pike off, again with a small hop. Her body position in the air is excellent, however.
Simon Porter, rings: L-sit to Maltese...Double pike front. Another Maltese...1.5 twisting double tuck with a step.
Rotation four: Senior women on beam, junior women on bars/vault, men on floor
Talia Chiarelli, beam: Bhs, layout, very good. Switch side. Side aerial. Switch, back tuck, one leg comes up but it's OK. Jumps. Comes off on punch front. Full turn. Double pike with a step back. 12.175.
Natalie Vaculik, bars: Full to Geinger. Bail to Ray to dead hang and stops. Blind to Jaeger. Half turn to giants to full twisting double tuck, really nice. Almost stuck, covered up by stepping to salute the judges. Canadian gymnastics has got to be very excited about her.
Brandon O'Neill, floor: Double double tucked. Tucked Thomas...2.5 front half (or full) tucked, big step to the side. Dismounts with 1.5 to front double full. Bet they're glad he's back.
Victoria Moors, bars: Toe stalder to toe Khorkina II, blind to Jaeger. Full turn, giant, bail, toe hecht to high, dismount is toe on front tuck half.
Bianca Jordaan, beam: Jump to scale. Switch, wolf. Bhs, layout, small check. Switch half. Side somie. Punch front. Double full? dismount.
Kaitlyn Hofland, bars: Hecht to high, Tkatchev, good. Jaeger pike and hits her heels on the bar, ouch. Bail to clear hip hecht and double twisting dismount. Good thing her coach was right there on that Jaeger. Other than that, however, a really nice routine with some big skills. Her releases, minus the Jaeger, looked really good.
Matthieu Csukassy, floor: He has a cheering section here...Hands down on double double tuck to open. 2.5 to front layout half.
Jordyn Pedersen, bars: Jump to high, stalder, full turn, Tkatchev, giant to Pak, toe hecht to high, blind to front giants to half turn (hits her feet on the low bar badly, ouch), double layout with legs a bit apart, but makes it easily. Feet are probably smarting right now.
Jackson Payne, floor: Hit routine with 2.5 twist dismount.
Sarah Flett, beam: Swing through mount. Punch front. Back tuck to back pike, and off on the back pike. In training, she has been so impressive, though she has had a few falls this week. Side aerial. Full turn. Switch side. Front pike, really good. Switch, wolf. Two steps into a really good roundoff, double tuck. Sigh.
Kevin Lytwyn, floor: Whip half to immediate double front -- nice pass. Tucked Thomas. 1.5 to front half, a little weak in the legs. 2.5 twist to end -- he begins the twist on that a little late, I think, but makes it fine with a step.
Marisa Dick, vault: FTY with a step. Didn't see second vault.
Jessica Savona, beam: Jump to scale. Punch front, step back. Bhs, layout to two feet, a little off but pulls it back on without any problems or real deductions. Switch half. Switch, back tuck. Switch side. Full turn, a little check. Side somie. Some of her landings look a tad hesitant, and make you think she's going to have big problems, but she doesn't -- everything she does is easily pulled back on with very minimal deductions. Roundoff, double pike with a hop. Great routine!
Victoria Moors, vault: Sits down Yurchenko 1.5. Second vault is a very nice Yurchenko full.
Hugh Smith, floor: Great form on everything he does. Arabian double front roll out to start. Didn't see second pass. 1.5 to front layout full, stuck. Press. 2.5 with a couple hops forward to end.
Ti Liu, beam: Roundoff, bhs on. Front aerial. Bhs, layout. Double turn but puts leg behind her, so she will receive credit for a 1.5. Side aerial. Side somie. Switch, scissone. Full turn with leg at head, overturns and wobbles but stays on. Roundoff, 1.5 twist dismount to end.
Stefanie Merkle, vault: FTY, basically stuck. Second vault is a Yurchenko layout.
Casey Sandy, floor: The former NCAA star is back after a leg injury last year...running full twisting front 1 3/4 to start. 1.5 to Rudi, I believe. Thomas tucked. 2.5 twist with a hop to the side to end the routine.
Julia Pellerin, vault: Yurchenko half with a large step forward. Second vault is a handspring front with a hop forward.
Dominique Pegg, beam: Jump to scale. Front aerial, bhs, layout. Switch side. Off on side aerial! Too bad, she looked great so far, and has all week on beam. Punch front, bend at the waist. Full turn with leg up. Switch, back tuck, solid. Roundoff, double tuck with a teeny little hop dismount. 13.05.
Madeline Gardiner, beam: Double turn in wolf position, slide to splits -- such an interesting element! Man, that is so hard. Takes a lot of risk to slide to splits as well. Jumps. Onodi, tiny little check. Front aerial. Bhs, layout to two feet, not ideal landing but saves it. Switch half, leg comes up a little but again, she saves it. Side aerial. Side somie, windmills arms. Roundoff, double pike with a step. Overtime, however.
Scott Morgan, floor: Double layout to open. Tucked Thomas. 2.5 to front layout. He's really got a tumbler's physique. Full in tucked to end! Big smile on his face. Great landing on that last pass...he could get into some serious finals with that routine!
Sabrina Tomassini, vault: FTY, bit of a deep knee bend on landing, and a hop back.
Maegan Chant, vault: Tsuk double full! Ooh, I believe she's the first Canadian to do that vault. Her Tsuk full's been great all week. Second vault: Handspring front tuck half, nearly stuck. Great job by Chant!
Robert Watson, floor: Arabian double front with a hop forward. Knee down on front layout, front double full.
Coralie Leblond-Chartrand, beam: Lots of "Allez Coco!" for her from the crowd. Press to fish flop. Front aerial, leg comes up a bit but OK. Bhs, layout, steps back. Side somie. Switch, scissone. Double full with a little step dismount.
Rotation five: Senior women on floor, second flight of junior women on vault, men on parallel bars
Kaitlyn Hofland, vault: FTY, nearly stuck. Very nice vault. Yurchenko layout, big hop back.
Matthieu Tcukassy, pbars: Off early in the routine.
Sabrina Gill, floor: It's been a learning experience for Gill this week. The normally solid senior has had a lot of mistakes as she's grown into several new skills, but better she gets this out of her system now than next year, I suppose...here she is on her only event final today. Full in tuck to open, little hop back. 1.5 to double tuck, hop. Tourjete half. Switch ring to switch half. Triple turn, makes it all the way around. Double pike with a step back, but it's a hit! Good for her. Nice way to end her week here.
Jayd Lukenchuk, pbars: Double tuck between the rails. Diamadov. Overbalances a little bit in one handstand...double pike with a step back. Not bad.
Demi Pas, floor: A really fun routine that suits her style very well. Opening pass should be a triple full...swing ring to the corner. Double full to open...hm, thought she warmed up a triple..Double pike, pulls it around. Switch, Tourjete half. Punch front to 1.5 twist, barely OOB. Double tuck, not bad. Very cute routine, very well performed. 12.425.
Casey Sandy, pbars: Hit routine.
Bianca Jordaan, floor: Very dark piece of music...Great full in tuck, just a step back. Tourjete half. Double turn, not quite around. 2.5 to punch front. Switch, switch half. Triple full to end! Side somie as part of the choreography before her ending pose.
Jackson Payne, pbars: Clear hip, giant, inside Diamadov to front straddle somie to his elbows. Peach basket to cut and catch and a double pike dismount, STUCK. You can see why he's the all-around champ!
Sarah Flett, floor: Probably the best "pure" tumbler in the field...we'll see if she throws her double layout today...nope, just a full in pike with little hop. Double tuck with a hop forward. Double turn. Switch, switch side half. Classical violins piece. She reminds me of Kim Zmeskal. Punch front through to double full. Popa (straddle full). Double pike to great landing! Lovely routine. 12.575, really? Did she fall and I not see it? Way too low.
Ken Ikeda, pbars: He's very smooth on this event. Double pike dismount to good landing, just a small hop. Nicely done!
Talia Chiarelli, floor: Arabian double front, great landing! 1.5 to double tuck, shuffles back a little. Switch to Tourjete half. 2.5 to front layout, well done. Double pike. Then her music cuts out for a second, but she finishes well anyway. 13.525. All respect to Chiarelli, I don't see how this is a point above Flett's.
Hugh Smith, pbars: Coached by former World team member and Olympian David Kikuchi...double pike dismount, tucked at the end but well landed. He has a great look on this event, as he does on all the others. 14.0.
Jessica Savona, floor: "Bent knees please," one of her coaches said to her as she warmed up her Arabian double pike/layout. "Smooth Criminal." Arabian double pike, little step back. 1.5 to easy double tuck, great! Double turn, a little rushed. Switch side half. Really getting her hair into her choreography...full in tuck with a bit of a bounce forward and upward. Double pike to good landing! Another great routine from Savona to close out her competition. 13.85.
Brandon O'Neill, pbars: Peach half, giant, giant full? Front somie. Belle. Geinger. Double pike with a step to the side. Not bad.
Taylor Ricci, floor: Triple full to open. A "Jock Jams" piece heard earlier in the open division, I think. Double tuck, low landing and takes several steps back. Tourjete half. 1.5 to front full layout, a bit of leg form in the air. Switch half. Double pike, big hop forward.
Kevin Lytwyn, pbars: Clear hip to Belle, double back, inside Diamadov. Stutz. Front somie, caught on his upper arms. Comes up short on something late in the rotuine and jumps off. Opts to rechalk and get back on. Double pike with a small step forward.
Dominique Pegg, floor: HIt routine! 1.5 to double tuck. Front layout to front layout full to scissone. That lovely Indian music that allows her to show off her grace. And a double tuck to end. No real problems. Very good routine, and very good comeback for Pegg! 13.65.
