Quick hits: 2011 CoverGirl Classic, junior COMPETITION

Rotation one:

Notes: 1988 Olympian Chelle Stack is judging beam, while Silvia Brestyan is officiating on floor.

Meredith Sylvia has scratched from the meet.

Ariana Guerra, vault: Yurchenko 1.5 sits down! Unexpected. 12.45.

Ashley Foss, bars: Toe hecht to high, quick Geinger, Pak, front stalder with pause, toe hecht to high, easy double layout, small hop. 11.95.

Claire Hammen, beam: Basically stuck roundoff, 2.5 twist to end. Believe it was a hit routine. 12.8.

Brianna Brown, floor: Arabian beat. Double pike? Twisting second pass. Switch, Tourjete half. 2.5 with a hop to end.

Shannon McNatt, vault: FTY, pulled it around but some leg form. 13.05

Kiana Winston, bars: Long wait for everyone after the first five routines...Toe hecht to high, stalder bliund to Jaeger a little close, toe stalder to toe 1.5, to half to bail to toe hecht to high, double layout, step/hop back. Believe that was a but improvised on high bar, with the toe 1.5.

Elizabeth Price, beam: Touched the beam.

Bridget Dean, floor: Fast beat. Good double pike to open. Double tuck to end. 12.35.

Nia Dennis, vault: Missed it. 14.15 though.

Dare Maxwell, bars: Toe full to kip to toe hecht to high, wonderful toe point, blind to front stalde rwith hesitation, Jaeger...bail to Ray, full in tuck with a step.

Nicole Lehrmann, beam: Fell, didn't see on what.

Lexie Priessman, floor: Cranks the double double tuck to open and makes it look easy. Wow. Pounding beat with percussion. 1.5 to 2.5 to singl estag that was really more of a big step. Punch front layout to front double full. Stayed on her feet but will be credited only for a Rudi. Full in tuck to end. Very impressive. 14.15.

Brenna Dowell, vault: Very impressive DTY! Great in the air, great block, great vault. Small step. 14.7 and deserved it.

Amanda Huang, bars: A good event for her, but misses her Jaeger. Full twisting double tuck with a step to big applause.

Mackenzie Brannan, beam: Off on punch front, missed a foot completely. Two bhs to double tuck with a step.

Simone Biles, floor: This should be a treat...roaring 20s big band music. Double turn with leg up before she tumbles. Wow double layout and bounces out! Boy. Goregeous form on that too. 1.5 to 2.5, a little leg form on 2.5 twist. This is an entertaining routine, well choreographed and Simone performs it well. Double pike to end. Fantastic back to back routines from Biles and Priessman.

Alexandra Marks, vault: Didn't see it.

Macy Toronjo, bars: Clear hip to Geinger caught way too close and stops her swing. Bail to toe hecht to high, blind to turns, double pike with a step back. 11.65.

Meredith Sylvia, beam: Scratch.

Jordan Stavrou, floor: Scratch.

Sarah Finnegan, vault: FTY, quite good.

Nica Hults, bars: Jump to highstalder full to bail a bit of a bend in the arms, hecht to high, inbar stalder to stalder blind to giants and basically stuck full in tuck. Nice!

Nichelle Christopherson, beam: Standing Arabian. Little wobbles here and there. Side somie.

Katelyn Ohashi, floor: I wonder if we'll see a new routine from Katelyn here? She's been due for one...nope. Didn't see the first pass, actually. Switch half. Full in pike. This is very much a routine Nastia might have done. Falls on last pass! Very surprising!

Maddie Desch, vault: DTY! Great. Small hop.

Polina Shchennikova, bars: HIt her foot on her double tuck? dismount on high bar after a great routine with Tkatchev, Pak and front stalderwork. Shame, but gald she's OK.

Ashley Szafranski, beam: Handstand split mount reminiscent of Nastia Liukin's...very nice work here. 2.5 twist dismount, not quite around.

Samantha Partyka, floor: 2.5 to front full. Arabian double front, overrotated to her knees. Double tuck. A little powerhouse, isn't she? Double pike to end. An enjoyable routine.

Ericha Fassbender, vault: Nice DTY but big step off the mat on landing. An upgrade for her.

Bailie Key, bars: Jump to high, lovely straight Geinger. Bail to toe hecht, to high... Full twisting double tuck, nearly stuck. Nicely done. She looks happy. She should be!

Stefani Catour, beam: Bhs, layout. Split jump, straddle jump.

Kyla Ross, floor: Another anticipated routine...Arabian double front to single stag, very nice! Full in tuck with a step back. New music for her, a poppy tango. Switch ring, switch half. 1.5 to double tuck, underrotated a little to keep it in bounds I thought, stepped forward. Toujete full. Double turn with leg up, not quite made it around. But this is a good routine. Double pike with a small step forward. Good routine! Good way to start.

Keely McNeer, vault: DTY, gets it around. New for Keely.

Kennedy Baker, bars: Tough routine for Kennedy -- gets in trouble early on when she overbalances a stalder blind, I think it was, and stops her swing. Then crashes the full twisting double tuck to her head. Ouch. She does not look pleased.

Lauren Marinez, floor: Lovely sequence to start -- real dance alert! Front handspring, front layout, front double full with a step to open. 2.5 twist with a step forward -- she starts the twist pretty late on this skill. Pulled the double tuck around at the end despite not hitting the floor correctly on her takeoff.

Peyton Ernst, bars: Toe blind to Jaeger, good, stalder full out of handstand to bail to hecht to high, full turn to full twisting double tuck with a step.

Amelia Hundley, floor: Very energetic start! Full in pike with a hop to the side. This kid can dance. 1.5 to front double full, almost all the way around. Switch ring to Tourjete full? 2.5 to front layout full. Now takes time to show it off. Double turn. Switch side half into the corner for her last pass. Double tuck to end, maybe just a little tired at this point, but she made it. All eyes were on her, too, since she was the last to perform.

Rotation two:

Notes: I was wondering whether Simone Biles, who has been training an Amanar, might throw it here. But she just took a very hard on the knees landing on a DTY and came back to her coach wincing and saying, "Ow. ow." So I'm guessing not.

Lexie Priessman, vault: Should be an Amanar. It is! Small step to the side. Very well done.

Nia Dennis, bars: Jump to high, comes off on first release. Large step on dismount.

Dare Maxwell, beam: Front aerial, bhs, back pike, leg came up but she turned it into a scale! Switch half. Side aerial. Pretty scale. Almost comes off on illusion? Big bend at the hips and almost grabs the beam. May have fallen at the end of the routine before dismount? 2.5 not around enough.

Nicole Lehrmann, floor: Opened with double pike, closed with 2.5 with a step forward.

Simone Biles, vault: DTY, stuck. Awesome.

Brenna Dowell, bars: The leader after rotation one...toe stalder full to Maleont to clear hip half to toe stalder blind to pike Jaeger. Bail to Ray, giants to full twisting double layout with a step. Gorgeous form throughout!

Amanda Huang, beam: Fell, didn't see on what.

Mackenzie Brannan, floor: 1.5 to double tuck to open.

Jordan Stavrou, vault: Both of her knees are incredibly heavily taped, and she touches.

Alexandra Marks, bars: Tkatchev. Bail, Ray. Misses something on high bar and has to stop her swing. Full in tuck dismount with a small hop.

Macy Toronjo, beam: Dismounted with just a roundoff, layout. Didn't see much of the rest.

Meredith Sylvia, floor: Scratch.

Katelyn Ohashi, vault: DTY, well done and easily landed, small hop. A little close to the horse, but whatever. She's Katelyn Ohashi.

Sarah Finnegan, bars: Jump to high, blind to pike Jaeger, toe stalder full to Geinger. Bail to toe hecht to giants and full twisting double tuck with a hop. Another lovely routine. The lines and form are just so perfect. A new strategy somewhat -- form over difficulty. And it may work.

Nichelle Christopherson, floor: Half in half out to open. A pass we don't see too often. Great Arabian double front with legs totally together. 2.5, a bit of leg form. Tangoish music.

Samantha Partyka, vault: Yurchenko 1.5. She has the misfortune of always performing after Ohashi, but that was a very good vault.

Maddie Desch, bars: Falls, but didn't see on what.

Nica Hults, beam: Press handstand mount. Front aerial, bhs, layout, oh beautiful! Switch ring, won't get credit for the ring. Side somie. Bhs, bhs, to 2.5 twist dismount. Really wonderful flight series. She's doing very well so far.

Ashley Szafranski, floor: Lovely music. 2.5 front pike to end. A wonderful dancer, this one.

Kyla Ross, vault: She sat another Amanar in the touch warmup just prior to this, but somehow, someway, she stands this one up. Good for her! Steps to the side though.

Ericha Fassbender, bars: Comes off very early in the routine. Too bad, because she's one of the better junior barworkers.

Polina Shchennkiova, beam: Just a lovely routine throughout. All the grace and presentation of Nastia Liukin. Mount is a press handstand to split, then she turns her hips and cartwheels out, and as soon as her first foot hits the beam, she does a straight, perfect back scale, with her left hand grabbing the bottom of the beam, and kicks over to a slow forward roll. And into the routine she goes. Front aerial, bhs, layout, good. A little distracted on a switch leap, of all things -- got her hips a little off and took a wobble. Side aerial. Lovely dance. Bhs, bhs, double full to end. Great stuff.

Bailie Key, beam: Didn't see most of it, but she dismounts with a very tidy 2.5 twist with a tiny little hop.

Stefani Catour, floor: Nice high tumbling. Double pike to end.

Lauren Marinez, vault: FTY with a small hop back.

Keely McNeer, bars: Whoa! Jump to high, Church (toe on piked Tkatchev) to immediate Pak! That was an attention getting combo, but she missed it and alas, hit her face on the low bar. That's probably what she did in warmups to make her nose bleed. Gets back up but missed Jaeger and falls again. And stops later in the routine. Gets the biggest hand of the day after her dismount. Boy, she was working some serious combos with Chow, but she hasn't mastered them yet.

Kennedy Baker, beam: Side aerial. Tourjete half. Huge Arabian double front dismount! Didn't see the rest of the routine, however.

Claire Hammen, floor: Missed it.

Amelia Hundley, vault: Good DTY with a small hop.

Kyla Ross's score on vault was a 15.25, I believe. Lexie Priessman has rocketed into the all-around lead over Ross.

Ariana Guerra, bars: Falls early in the routine, didn't see on what.

Peyton Ernst, beam: Missed it.

Elizabeth Price, floor: Missed it.

Brianna Brown, vault: FTY, good early open out. I'd guess she's working something harder.

Shannon McNatt, bars: Hit routine.

Ashley Foss, beam: Falls, didn't see on what, though. Started her routine with a lovely split jump full. Falls a second time, this time on switch leap, back tuck. Two bhs to double tuck

Bridget Dean, vault: Missed it.

Kiana Winston, beam: Jump to middle splits, comes off on a back tuck after a long, valiant fight to save it. Standing Arabian, falls again. This has been a fairly hard day for the Texas Dreams juniors...full turn. A little moonwalk. Bhs, layout, wobbles but saves it. The audience is applauding her on. Switch side. Punch front, solid. Bhs, bhs, double tuck with a step forward.

Rotation three:

Top five: Lexie Priessman, Kyla Ross, Brenna Dowell, Nica Hults, Simone Biles.

Meredith Sylvia, vault: Scratch.

Jordan Stavrou, bars: Blind ot Jaeger, great. Nice swing on this event. Bail to toe hecht to high. Full turn to double layout (a little bit of legs in the air.)

Alexandra Marks, beam: Bhs, layout to two feet, very nice.

Macy Toronjo, floor: Full in tuck. Charming Mexican mariachi music. 2.5 not quite around.

Nichelle Christopherson, vault: Didn't see it.

Katelyn Ohashi, bars: Toe hecht to high -- that pop! Full to Tkatchev, toe staldfer to blind to front stalder to Jaeger, lovely. Bail to Ray, excellent. ginats to double twisting double tuck, both twists on the second flip, nearly puts her face in her knees landing it but does land it. Nice routine! 15.0. Nice.

Sarah Finnegan, beam: Overrotates bhs, bhs to double pike and rolls out of it.

Nica Hults, floor: Front double full to open. Double pike, almost puts her hands down on bounce out. 1.5 to front layout. A slower version of the music Vanessa Atler used in 1998-1999.

Ashley Szafranski, vault: Yurchenko layout.

Samantha Partyka, bars: Jump to high, toe stalder, full turn, bail to toe hecht to high, full twisting double layout with a small step. Good routine!

Polina Shchennikova, floor: "Roxanne". Double tuck and sits down! A shame!

Maddie Desch, beam: Two bhs to double tuck dismount, well controlled and nearly stuck.

Stefani Catour, vault: FTY.

Kyla Ross, bars: Blind to Jaeger, toe stalder full to bail to toe hecht to high, inbar stalder, toe stalder, giants to wonderful stuck double layout! Ross has made her move. That's obvious enough.

Ericha Fassbender, beam: Didn't see it.

Bailie Key, floor: What a cutie! A fun routine to a cute piece of music that you might hear at a carnival, and the choreo to match. 2.5 to punch front to open, makes it look easy. Double pike. Triple full?! to end. Lots of applause for this.

Claire Hammen, vault: Didn't see it.

Lauren Marinez, bars: Didn't see it.

Keely McNeer, beam: Didn't see it.

Kennedy Baker, floor: A new routine for Kennedy, I believe...Huge 1.5 to Arabian double front with a step back. Arabian double pike! Very nice. Double turn in sit position a la Lauren Mitchell. Switch to Tourjete full. Switch half. Roundoff, 2.5 twist to end (legs a little apart.) Nice routine!

Elizabeth Price, vault: FTY, well done.

Amelia Hundley, bars: Hit routine with full in tuck dismount. Big smile as she salutes the judges!

Ariana Guerra, beam: Falls on side aerial. Ouch.

Peyton Ernst, floor: Scratch?

Nicole Lehrmann, vault: Didn't see it.

Brianna Brown, bars: Toe stalder to Maloeny to unqieu undergrip on upswing. Jaeger. Pak. Toe hecht to high, toe stalder to immediate full twisting double tuck! Great routine for Brianna.

Shannon McNatt, beam: Falls, didn't see on what. 11.1.

Ashley Foss, floor: Charming routine. This one's a dancer. Didn't see the first pass. Second was 1.5 to front layout, I think. Then double tuck, stuck, to end. A lot of presentation and promisse in this one.

Mackenzie Brannan, vault: Yurchenko 1.5 with a small step.

Bridget Dean, bars: Toe hecht to high. Jaeger. Toe on Tkatchev. Bail, legs apart to clear hip to toe hecht, full turn not in handstand, double layout with a bit of leg form. She rushed a little in this routine. 12.85.

Nia Dennis, beam: Didn't see much of this routine, but she got a big ovation when she dismounted, which either means it was great or she took a big fall and kept going....

Kiana Winston, floor: Arabian double front mount. Stuck double tuck second pass. Tourjete half. Front layout, front layout. Music is violins with a kind of hard edge and driving beat. Very dramatic. Great high double pike to end. Good for her! Way to recover after beam.

Lexie Priessman, bars: Crooked on her Tkatchev but does not stop...bail to toe hecht to to blind to Jaeger, giants and pikey full twisting double layout with a hop.

Dare Maxwell, floor: Lovely Spanish guitar piece. Nice opening pass. Second pass, after a great double turn with leg up, is a triple full, not quite all the way around. Double pike with a step back to end.

Rotation four:

Polina Shchennkova, vault: FTY, tiny little hop, good form.

Ashley Szafranski, bars: Hit routine.

Samantha Partyka, beam: Switch, gainer layout stepout.

Maddie Desch, floor: Arabian double front, OOB. 1.5 to front double full. Very fast paced music. Steps OOB on last pass as well.

Bailie Key, vault: FTY. And a hug from coach Chris Burdette.

Stefani Catour, bars: I believe she fell, but didn't see on what.

Kyla Ross, beam: Front aerial, bhs, layout. Side somie. Jumps. Sheep after an acro skill. Really attacks her roundoff, double tuck dismount, takes a step back. Given the applause, I think that was a hit routine.

Ericha Fassbender, floor: Full in pike, stuck. Great job! But sits down the Arabian double front! Oh dear...hands down on last pass too. When she does this well, she does it really well. Unfortunately that was a miss.

Kennedy Baker, vault: FTY.

Claire Hammen, bars: Jump to high, toe blind...toe hecht to high after some kind of transition. Shushunova! Casts out too far on her double front dismount, and sits down.

Lauren Marinez, beam: Missed it.

Keely McNeer, floor: Scratch, I believe.

Peyton Ernst, vault: Scratch?

Elizabeth Price, bars: Wieler kip half to Maloney to Hindorff, realy big. Toe stalder full to Tkatchev, stalder to bail to Ray and a nice double layout with a small step.

Amelia Hundley, beam: Side aerial. Switch to scissone. Switch side half. Punch front. Bhs, bhs (both to two feet) to 2.5 twist dismount. Didn't see the first part, or whether she threw her tuck full that she'd been working.

Ariana Guerra, floor: Tourjete full is the first thing she does. Full in pike. Fast paced music, like from a chase scene from a kids movie.,..Inspector Gadget? 2.5 to layout front. Double turn.

Ashley Foss, vault: A Yurchenko layout from this tiny, talented youngster.

Nicole Lehrmann, bars: Missed it.

Brianna Brown, beam: Tourjete half, a little check. Full turn with leg up, not quite around. Side somie. Dismount is double tuck with a step back.

Shannon McNatt, floor: Fell out of her first tumbling pass. "Smooth Criminal." Hands down on last pass of double pik eas well.

Kiana Winston, vault: FTY? DTY? I'm not sure, buyt she landed it.

Bridget Dean, beam: Stuck roundoff double tuck dismount.

Nia Dennis, floor: Fun music, rather Aborginial. Double tuck, bounces OOB to end. This kid can tumble.

Dare Maxwell, vault: FTY with a small step.

Mackenzie Brannan, bars: Jump to high, huge Rican. Hits her feet on her Pak salto. Then crashes full twisting double layout. Shame!

Lexie Priessman, beam: Missed most of it but the full in tuck dismount was a hit!

Brenna Dowell, floor: Same routine as last year. Tourjete full before she tumbles. Handspring, double front, very nice. Switch, switch half. 2.5 to front layout, just makes it to her feet after underrotating the layout a bit. Front double full to punch front pike. Nice routine.

Amanda Huang, vault: Whatever she did, she made it to her feet...

Nichelle Christopherson, bars: Tkatchev. Overcasts the bail and can't hold on, comes off. Full twisting double tuck to her knees.

Simone Biles, beam: Sheep. Split jump, wolf jump. Almost comes off on front aerial -- leg comes way off but she's OK. Bhs, layout. Switch half. Two bhs to double pike with a small step. Huge cheers from her fan section, which happens to be right behind the press seating.

Alexandra Marks, floor: Double pike second pass. Dramatic music that becomes a kind of tango. Kind of. 1.5 to front pike. Nice 2.5 twist to end.

Macy Toronjo, vault: Nearly stuck FTY.

Jordan Stavrou, beam: Both of her knees are really heavily taped -- I'm guessing she hyperextended them at the same time on something. But this has been a clean routine, and she did a nice double twist dismount.

Sarah Finnegan, floor: The house is all attention for these last two routines, and they're going to be good...Spanish guitar, very "Mask of Zorroish". Huge high full in tuck, makes it look easy. Triple turn in sit position, doesn't quite get there but goes for it. Half of the last turn is done on her bottom. Oh well. Wonderful Arabian double front. Stuck that one. 1.5 to 2.5. She doesn't really bounce when she lands, unlike lots of competitors out here.

Nica Hults, vault: FTY, almost gets it around but has to put her hands down. A learning experience.

Katelyn Ohashi, beam: Here we go....Press to splits mount, single stag position on the beam. Off on standing Arabian! Shoot. Jumps. Bhs, bhs, layout full and makes it! Leg comes up but oh well. Switch ring. Onodi to immediate front aerial to sheep! Full turn with leg at head. Switch half. Full in pike with a step back. A pretty wow routine in spite of the fall.
