Quick Fix: Inside jokes don't belong in online dating profiles

Some things are so easy to fix.  This is one of them.

Remember that the audience for your online dating profile is strangers.  These, by definition, are people who do not know you.  They are going to read your profile essays and decide whether or not they'd be interested in pursuing a romantic relationship with you.

That being said, why would you make reference to things that a stranger would never understand?

I find people with totally obscure (or semi-inappropriate) usernames and headlines all the time.

For example, it's super if you play Dungeons & Dragons.  But the headline: "Come see my dungeon!" sends a totally different message to those who aren't in the geek crowd.  For most women, that's a giant red flag saying, "MOVE ON!  He's into scary things like bondage!"

If your username sounds like something else, it's time to change it.  For example, I used to frequently use the pen name Allegra.  Since Allegra is now the name of a drug, having the screenname LoveAllegra would send a message that I'm really serious about allergy relief.

Keep in mind that a dating profile is not written for you; it's written for the person you want to attract.

About E:   In high school, E's pen name of choice was Allegra Monteverdi.  Very musical.  Then she Googled it one day and found out that Allegra Monteverdi was a heroine in a series of romance novels by Gaelen Foley (no relation).  Isn't that weird?  She changed her fake surname and still uses it on occasion.
