Quick Chakra Reference Guide and Balancing Meditation

Dear Readers, I’m feeling the need to balance my chakras and just in case you are, too, here’s a quick and easy reference guide followed by a quick and easy balancing meditation. Let’s start with a short review:

Chakras are the centers of energy in our bodies. They are the openings for our life force (Chi) to flow into and out of our aura, and throughout our bodies. Their function is to vitalize the body and bring about the development of our self-consciousness. Our energy centers/chakras are like vibrating wheels, which, while invisible to the human eye, can be perceived intuitively. There are seven main chakras, located on the midline of the body, and they are associated with our physical, mental, and emotional interactions.

When our chakras are balanced, we are healthy and happy. When our chakras are “open,” our Chi (life force) flows properly throughout our body. Sometimes, though, our chakras are not fully open and operational, and this can be caused by psychological stress or trauma. It is then up to us to balance our chakras, and there are many ways and techniques to balance our chakras, including (1) through the placement of color-coordinated stones on the chakra points of the body; (2) meditating with color-coordinated stones; and (3) visualizing the chakras in our bodies. Take a look at the picture accompanying this column, and you’ll see the chakra locations and the colors associated with them.

Quick Chakra Reference Guide:

1st (Root) Chakra is located in the Perineum; Function: Governs basic instincts, survival & feelings of security; Color: Red; Crystals/Stones: Red jasper, garnet, smokey quartz, black tourmaline, black Obsidian. The Root chakra is about being physically there and feeling at home in situations. If it is open, you feel grounded, stable and secure. You feel present in the here and now and connected to your physical body. If you tend to be fearful or nervous, your Root chakra is probably under-active. If this chakra is over-active, you may be a bit materialistic and greedy; you may be obsessed with being secure and resist change.

2nd (Sacrum) Chakra is located in the Abdomen; Function: Governs sexual energy/emotions/ creativity; Color: Orange; Crystals/Stones: Carnelian, orange calcite. The Sacral chakra is about feeling and sexuality. When it is open, your feelings flow freely, and are expressed without being over-emotional. You are open to intimacy and have no problems dealing with your sexuality. If you tend to be stiff and unemotional or have a poker face, the Sacral chakra is under-active and you may not be open to people. If this chakra is over-active, you may tend to be overly emotional.

3rd (Solar Plexus) Chakra is located at the Solar Plexus (Belly button area); Function: Governs digestion, mental function, and power; Color: Yellow; Crystals/Stones: Citrine, yellow calcite, yellow jasper. The Solar Plexus/Navel chakra is about asserting yourself in a group. When it is open, you feel in control and you have sufficient self esteem. When the Navel chakra is under-active, you tend to be passive and indecisive. If this chakra is over-active, you may be domineering or aggressive.

4th (Heart) Chakra is located at the center of the chest; Function: Governs love and compassion; Color: Green or pink; Crystals/Stones: Green aventurine, pink quartz, jade, pink tourmaline. The Heart chakra is about love, kindness and affection. When it is open, you are compassionate and friendly, and you work at harmonious relationships. When your Heart chakra is under-active, you may be cold and distant.

5th (Throat ) Chakra is located at the throat. Function: Governs communication, self-expression, and growth; Color: Blue; Crystals/Stones: Sodalite, blue calcite, blue turquoise. The Throat chakra is about self-expression and talking. When it is open, you have no problems expressing yourself. When this chakra is under-active, you may tend not to speak much, and you may be introverted and shy. Not speaking the truth may block this chakra.

6th (Brow/Third Eye) Chakra is located at the forehead/Between our eyes. Function: Governs intuition and perception; Color: Purple or Indigo; Crystals/Stones: Amethyst, lapis lazuli, sugilite. The Third Eye chakra is about insight and visualization. When it is open, you have a good intuition. If it is under-active, you may have a challenge thinking for yourself, and you may tend to rely on authorities.

7th (Crown) Chakra is located at the top of the head. Function: Governs Spiritual awareness/connection to the Divine; Color: Clear or violet; Crystals/Stones: Clear crystal quartz, amethyst. The Crown chakra is about wisdom and being one with the world. When this chakra is open, you are unprejudiced and quite aware of the world and yourself. If it is under-active, you may be less spiritually aware. If this chakra is over-active, you may intellectualize things too much and you may be ignoring your body’s needs.

Chakra Balancing Meditation: This mediation will help you achieve relaxed awareness while replenishing bodily energy...

  • Assume your meditation posture, making sure to keep your back straight to ensure energy flow throughout your body.
  • Regulate your breathing.*
  • Hold a stone or imagine the color of the 1st chakra. Imagine its color as clearly as possible and focus on this energy center.
  • Visualize the color of the 1st chakra entering you through its chakra point on the body, and then visualize it expanding and penetrating throughout your body.
  • Repeat for each of the 7 chakras.

* Yoga Breathing works very well for Chakra Meditations: Pretend you’re filling up a party balloon on your belly, as you inhale by filling the abdomen and continue inhaling as you expand and fill the chest. Then exhale first from the chest as it empties and falls and then continue exhaling from the abdomen as it draws inwards completely. This is one round of full yoga breath. Don’t force it— your breath should flow fully and naturally.
