Queretaro opens Mexican league with victory over Morelia

Queretaro FC took the first game of the Clausura 2014 with a 1-0 victory over Monarcas Morelia at the Morelos stadium to open action in La Liga MX. A lone goal from the visiting squad was all it took for the Gallos Blancos to defeat Morelia for the first time since 2007.

Morelia had Carlos Rodriguez under the posts as Argentine Federico Vilar left the squad at the end of last season.

Gallos Blancos began the game pressuring the home side. Paraguayan Esteban Paredes gave the first warning signs as he headed wide on two occasions but with no luck. That did not stop Ignacio Ambriz’s team. Morelia appeared lost on the field with no creativity from Colombian Duvier Riascos.

It took 17 minutes for Queretaro to certify they were the “boss” on the pitch. After receiving a foul on the wing outside the box the visiting squad took the set-piece to put the team on the board. Argentine Miguel Angel Martinez elevated past veteran Felipe Baloy of Panama. Martinez headed the ball into the far bottom corner beating a diving goalkeeper for the 1-0.

Queretaro continued to attack with plays coming from recent signing Christian “Hobbit” Bermudez who had very little playing time with Club America in Mexico City. He was constant on the field recovering and setting up plays. The game went to the break with Queretaro leading.

Monarcas was a different team in the second half pushing Queretaro back against the wall. Chilean Hector Mancilla was close to putting the ball in the net in the 53rd minute after goalkeeper Edgar Hernandez dropped the ball inches from his boots. On the same play Hernandez collided with his defender who busted his head open. The doctor could not stop the bleeding and he was substituted by Miguel Fraga.

From that moment forward Queretaro fell back to receive the purepechas’ firepower. Morelia forced a foul from George Corral who already had a yellow card to leave the visitors with a man down. Despite the disadvantage, Queretaro held their ground and defended well to take the three points from the match.

Queretaro will host Pumas UNAM in week 2 action. Morelia will travel to Toluca as they try to generate their first three points of the season.
