While Reservoir Dogs is more watchable and Jackie Brown arguably goes deeper, no film in the Tarantino cannon has the epochal force and commitment to vision like this classic. Here, Tarantino’s truths and insights are sharper than ever and his witty comedy reaches monumental highs. Samuel L. Jackson, Uma Thurman, John Travolta, Ving Rhames, Bruce Willis and Tim Roth all put forth career defining (and sometimes defying) roles as iconic characters or as part of iconic scenes. This is a film that transcends the realm of description and must be viewed to be understood. Here is the very definition of a perfectly constructed movie. Every scene here is so well constructed and instantly classic, every image is so iconic, every moment so dynamic. Tarantino creates in Pulp Fiction America’s answer to Godard’s genre clashing style critical of movie conventions, at last meaningfully answered after almost 40 years of cinema.
