The Queen’s speech for 2013 was a reflection of prominent events from the past year, according to a Dec. 25 Evening Chronicle report. Filled with thoughts of renewed “happiness and hope,” Queen Elizabeth issued her traditional message from the Blue Drawing Room at Buckingham Palace.

The Daily Mail reports that the queen spoke of her great-grandson Prince George during the Christmas broadcast, noting that “...the arrival of a baby gives everyone the chance to contemplate the future with renewed happiness and hope” She also observed that, for the Kate Middleton and Prince William, “life will never quite be the same again.”

With her great-grandson still on her mind, the Queen described Prince George’s christening as a “happy occasion,” including the Royal Family’s traditional photoshoot that took place after the ceremony. Behind-the-scenes footage from the Clarence House photoshoot was shown during the broadcast.

But it was not all about Prince George, the Queen spoke about the role of the Commonwealth, the Commonwealth games in Glasgow in 2014, and recalled the celebrations surrounding her 60th anniversary on the throne, BBC reports. The Queen reminded everyone of the need for balance. “We all need to get the balance right between action and reflection,” she said. “With so many distractions, it is easy to forget to pause and take stock.”

Of her 60th anniversary, she observed fondly, “The anniversary reminded me of the remarkable changes that have occurred since the coronation, many of them for the better, and of the things that have remained constant, such as the importance of family, friendship and good neighbourliness.”

To the armed forces and their families, she expressed her gratitude. “We are forever grateful to all those who put themselves at risk to keep us safe.”

She spoke on the Gassgow games, noting “Its journey is a reminder that the Commonwealth can offer us a fresh view of life.”

The Queen gave her speech in the single crepe wool Angela Kelly primrose dress, which she wore to Prince Wiliam and Middleton’s wedding in April 2011.
