It's a good thing the new Queen Latifah Show got high ratings for its debut because this means more people watched her give audience members $50 each to donate to schools yesterday, according to the show's website. This is great inspiration for parents and students to compare their school with others and perform some school community service. For the college-bound, volunteer activities can help students develop skills and provide leadership opportunities that colleges want.
- Arthur Ashe Charter School – New Orleans, Louisiana
- Aspire Monarch Academy – Oakland, California
- Commodore John Rodgers Elementary/Middle School – Baltimore, Maryland
- Irving Elementary School – Joplin, Missouri (impacted by 2011 Joplin tornadoes)
- Lida Hooe Elementary School – Dallas, Texas
Each school has one or more teachers who describe their classroom needs such as school books and supplies, musical instruments, technology and other resources. Donors can select a school and a project and hear back from the classroom they helped.
DonorsChoose.org is an online charity dedicated to educational needs. Public school and public charter school teachers throughout the country post classroom project requests on the site. Donations of one dollar or more are accepted.
According to its website, "When a project reaches its funding goal, we ship the materials to the school. You'll get photos of the project taking place, a letter from the teacher, and insight into how every dollar was spent. Give over $50 and you'll also receive hand-written thank-yous from the students."
Parents and children can take a close look at their own schools and those in or near their district. Ask administrators, teachers and students for project suggestions. Helping neighborhood schools benefits the entire community and enhances the learning experience for donors and beneficiaries.
