"A lot of this for me personally as trying to understand dealing with one's own mortality," the actor said during his appearance on the show. "I remember one scene where I go to the doctor and I tell him 'look, I need some AZT. I'm dying.' That word is the hardest word that ever had to come out of my personal mouth and it just hit me. It's a word we don't use in the first person, at least I haven't. Most people haven't...[they try to keep going]... and this guy did it for seven more years. That's the emotional challenge of trying to understand."

McConaughey also stars in the HBO drama "True Detective" and will once again lend his dancing skills to "Magic Mike 2."

The 86th Academy Awards will be announced live on Sunday, March 2nd on ABC.
