Queen Latifah promotes positive body image: 'I was not born a size 2'

Life should be good when you're the queen, right? In reality, though, Queen Latifah admits that she struggled with self-acceptance before making peace with herself personally and professionally, revealed Us Weekly on Dec. 11.

The generously proportioned singer and new talk show host used to dislike her body. It took personal growth to feel good about her size.

"I think I got to that place by not being happy with the other side -- hating your body and criticizing yourself all the time. When I was around 18, I looked in the mirror and said, You're either going to love yourself or hate yourself. And I decided to love myself," Latifah said.

After accepting her size, "that changed a lot of things," added Latifah.

She recognizes that she's not the standard size zero entertainment icon.

"For a lot of the things I've wanted to do in life, I haven't looked typical," said Latifah candidly.

"I was not born a size 2. I'm not skinny, period."

However, that doesn't mean that she neglects exercise. Her celebrity trainer Jeanette Jenkins works regularly with Latifah to help her be healthier, not skinnier, reported Fitness magazine recently. The workout includes both cardio and strength-training moves.

In addition, Latifah learned to eat right as a spokeswoman for Jenny Craig. The weight loss company reports that she lost 20 pounds on the program.

However, Latifah has put her own spin on healthy eating: Read about her diet, from tequila to tomatoes, by clicking here.
