If you've made a New Year's resolution to improve your diet and lose weight, Queen Latifah wants to help. On her Jan. 7 talk show, she talked with holistic diet guru Deepak Chopra about his views on how you can achieve those goals.
Deepak says that winning at weight loss isn't as simple as cutting calories or counting carbohydrates. He contends that it needs to involve the mind, body and spirit, and has a new book talking about those areas: "What Are You Hungry For?: The Chopra Solution to Permanent Weight Loss, Well-Being, and Lightness of Soul."
Queen Latifah asked Deepak to explain how to delve deep to understand the difference between true physical hunger and emotional eating. He explained that it requires being aware of what's triggering your eating, and then taking steps to find fulfillment of those issues, which might range from loneliness to depression to boredom. He also recommends meditation.
What can you do if you really are hungry, but tend to crave all the wrong foods? Make swaps, says Deepak.
"Sugar, salt, and fat are the most addictive foods and most toxic. And these foods just reinforce cravings -- that’s why you can’t have just one potato chip. Once you have one your body craves more," explained Deepak.
"So try something the exact opposite, like a radish or cucumber and have them with something spicy."
In addition, he emphasizes that getting enough sleep plays a critical role in weight loss. If you aren't getting enough sleep, your hormones become unbalanced, causing problems with your metabolism.
When it comes to exercise, Queen Latifah offered some motivation by introducing her own personal trainer, Jeanette Jenkins, creator of "Jeanette Jenkins/ The Hollywood Trainer: Cardio Kickboxing." Together, they're kicking off the first Queen Latifah six-week get-healthy challenge.
Jeanette offered these tips to get you started:
- Accept that you need to change.
- Schedule your workouts.
- Develop the habit of exercise.
- Get support from a friend who will exercise with you.
- Measure your progress.
