In its third year, Queen City Kamikaze has proven to be the place to go for inexpensive otaku fun for anime and video game fans of all ages.
The event was held on the first floor of Manchester Memorial High School, featuring events in both the main hallways of the school.
Big changes were made between this year and the previous year, making the event feel more like a smaller version of the more expensive three day anime convention.
This year, two side hallways were reserved for screenings, where one side featured older live action films while the other featured more viewer driven anime screenings. In the gym, where the screenings were held last year, otakus could dance the day away or choose to participate in random mock fighting with replica weapons.
Another change made was to the number of panels featured, where last year the focus was more on the game shows such as Anime Dating Game and Video Game Jeopardy. Panels ranged from how to create music for anime and video games to the direction of where the horror genre is going.
But as usual, the main attraction were the costumes that participants came dressed up in to the event. Although there were some dressed as cosplay staples such as characters from "Black Butler," "Ouran High School Host Club," and "Death Note," others chose to go with not so usual choices, such as Nostalgia Critic from website thatguywiththeglasses.com, popular internet meme Nyan Cat, and Meatwad from Cartoon Network Adult Swim show "Aqua Teen Hunger Force", where a red beanbag was turned into a costume in order to pull off the effect.
"A, I had the beanbag lying around," "Meatwad" said when asked on his choice. "B, my roommate is already a Frylock (another character from "Aqua Teen"), and C, we got our other roommate to do Shake."
"Meatwad" and his group, Aqua Teen Rap, won for best group performance at this year's Masquerade, with Draco and Hermione from "Harry Potter" winning for best presentation, Victor Belmont from the "Castlevania" series winning for best craftsmanship, and the group Talia and Chelsea winning for best in show.
