Queen and Duke of Edinburgh attend Braemar Gathering

HM Queen Elizabeth and her husband HRH the Duke of Edinburgh made the trip from Balmoral and attended the annual Braemar Highland Gathering on Saturday.  The event is the biggest on the Highland Games calendar and is held annually on the first Saturday each September.  Also in attendance this year were Prime Minister David Cameron and his wife Samantha but disappointing royal watchers, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were rumored to attend but did not.  Mr. Cameron was there as a guest of the Queen and is only the second Prime Minister to ever attend.  The Gathering is held at The Princess Royal and Duke of Fife Memorial Park and highlights events such as the hammer throw, the caber toss, and tug-o-war.  The event has been around for 200 years and is an annual engagement on the royal calendar.  The Gathering is known locally as “The Games; they originate from those first held by Malcolm III.  In about 1826, the Braemar Highland Society was created and then the first modern-day games took place in 1832. The monarch has been the patron of the Braemar Royal Highland Society since the days of Queen Victoria.
