For those of you who are fans of Man V. Food on the Travel Channel you may recall the Pittsburg, Pennsylvania episode where Adam Richman took on the atomic wings challenge at Quaker Steak and Lube, where every month brave souls who can take the heat have their names displayed on their wall of flame.
Now you can see if you have what it takes to have your name live on in fiery fame.
Located at 4515 28th St SE., Quaker Steak and Lube offers up a variety of sports pub style favorites with a twist. They host a creative collection of burgers, sandwiches, char-grilled steaks, fall off the bone ribs, signature flatbreads and more.
But I went there for the wings...
There are over 20 different incredible sauces to choose from for your wings. Each one is measured in Scoville units (a Scoville unit is basically a measurement of the spice level in different chile peppers). The sauces range from mild (ranch and BBQ) at a mere 90 units all the way to the legendary atomic sauce which weighs in at 150,000 units. However, upon opening here this past December, they decided to take it one step further and add the triple atomic hot wings which fire up at 500,000 units!
With both the atomic and triple atomic challenges you must sign a waver basically absolving all responsibility of the restaurant should you sustain third degree gastro intestinal burns, suffer some sort of attack, or subsequent to the meal have certain sensitive areas of your body become a blowtorch.
Guess which one I chose…
The wings are amazing, jumbo sized and full of flavor. The triple atomic sauce is mildly sweet and spicy. The flavor is almost reminiscent of a mango-habanero sauce but with more depth and complexity. In order to complete the challenge you have to consume all six wings yourself, but you do have the option of having beverages and the usual accoutrements of ranch, bleu cheese and veggies if you so desire.
When I finished, they put my name on the wall (I’m on there for December and January…yes, if you like hot stuff they are that good), I received the “atomic wings survivor” bumper sticker, and because I won the triple atomic wings challenge, I got a “too hot to handle” T-shirt.
Good food, friendly staff, and jovial atmosphere at our very own Quaker Steak and Lube.
