Examiner recently had the chance to chat with Rowland Hobbs, creator of Linea. He talks about the new age of photography, the allure of online albums, the best ways to take a photo and more...
Q: What is the general concept behind Linea?
A: Linea makes browsing, sharing and telling stories with your original photography simple, collaborative and inspirational. The name comes from "line" because as you add your photos, it scrolls in a beautiful mosaic left to right in an infinite line. Invite friends to add with you, and a story unfolds. Or add your photos for yourself to get a perfect photo book or shareable photo magazine.
Q: Is Linea user friendly, in other words are amateurs and professionals on the same track when using Linea?
A: Very user friendly. On iPhone or iPad you can create beautiful photo line in seconds by adding pictures from your Camera Roll, PhotoStream, Dropbox or Facebook, design a stunning photo book in under a minute that gets sent straight to your door, and have your friends add pictures too by inviting them to a Line. In September, you'll be able to follow other people's Lines too like Twitter. But for photos.
Q: Where do you see the future of photography in the digital world?
A: We have more photos than ever, and no way to see all of them. We are stuck in a world of slide shows where we see photos one at a time. This technology was created over a hundred years ago, and has not been innovated since the Kodak Carousel in the 1960s. That slide show is still with us, and it slows us down. Linea aims to change all that. The future of photography in digital is the infinite scroll, the Linea Mosaic and intelligent "computer vision" or algorithms like our Intelligent Photo Framing, which perfectly frame your photos for viewing and printing. You can sign up for our photo framing beta here.
Q: Would you say Linea is like an online photo album meets virtual museum?
A:Yes! In fact, many museums use Linea to showcase art, photography, and what’s going on behind the scenes at their events. Our fashion fans have told us they think of it as a digital look book, or inspiration board for original photography. In fact, LuvAJ, an incredible accessory line by designer Amanda Thomas, has created a whole place to put inspirational original photography. Check it out here!
Q: How do potentials users get started?
A: Go to iTunes App Store and download Linea here. Or go to getlinea.com and create an account. The web app is better for viewing, sharing and adding photos. iPhone and iPad you can do this too, but you can also customize your look with our awesome and simple edit feature or just print a book and we'll send it to you in a few days.
Q: Can users access Linea from any portal, ex: online, ipad, android etc?
A: Right now, users can access Linea from iPads, iPhones, and the web.We don’t have an app for Android devices yet.
Q: Do you have any general tips on how to take the perfect photo?
A: I don't believe in the perfect photo. I believe every photo, even the "mistakes” are awesome. That's why Linea lets you drop in all your photos and then takes care of your pictures. Here is a great example: my nephew always makes faces as we take pictures. Some would say only keep the one where he smiles. But put them all into Linea and you really see his personality come out in the fun, cheeky, and clever ways he messes with the photographer. If it was a regular slide show that would be tedious. In Linea, it's fun!
