(Putnam County, FL.) -- Putnam County sheriff Jeff Hardy released a statement today addressing rumors that the remains of 5 year-old Haleigh Cummings were discovered during last weeks search for her body along the St. Johns River at the Shell Harbor boat ramp.

The prepared statement from sheriff’s deputy Lt. Johnny Greenwood reads as follows:

“The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office has received numerous inquiries regarding the recovery of the skeletal remains of missing 5 year-old Haleigh Cummings. A rumor has spread throughout our community that her body has been located. This rumor is false, and this information has been vastly misreported and sensationalized by the media.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office did recover animal remains such as alligator claws and teeth, and a multiple animal bones. The agency had an anthropologist at the scene that identified all "biological" items that were recovered as being non-human. Additionally, Misty Croslin could have easily seen these items while she was at the dock while the dive operation was in progress.

In an effort to prevent this false information from impeding our investigation, Sheriff Hardy wants to quell these rumors so we can maintain our focus on the criminal investigation.”

Last week WJXT, a Jacksonville T.V. station reported two cinder blocks were pulled from the Saint Johns River during the search for Haleigh. Police have said Haleigh is dead, and there are multiple persons of interest in the case.

Flora Hollars, Misty Croslin’s grandmother told CNN’s Nancy Grace that Timmy Croslin, Misty Croslin’s brother, called from jail and said he was in the Cummings home with Misty and her cousin Joe Overstreet the night Haleigh went missing. She added, Overstreet went to the home to steal a gun and when the gun couldn’t be found Overstreet took Haleigh instead.

Misty Croslin reportedly confirmed the story in a similar conversation with her grandmother. According to Croslin said that Joe Overstreet held a knife to her throat and told her he would kill her if she ever told anyone.
