I know firsthand how endearing the little Chihuahua can be because I too am an owner and always looking for more. Anyone not familiar with the required care of these little guys can be in for a big surprise if this little dog with the big personality is not what they are looking for. As lovable as they are, the Chihuahua is not the right dog for everyone. Your local Rockford-area veterinarian as listed below or one closest to your home can help you with facts about choosing a Chihuahua for you or your family.
Before adopting any breed of dog, it is always smart to do your research on personality, health issues, special needs and concerns regarding your breed of choice. For instance, you would not want to adopt a Great Dane to live in a studio apartment just as you would not want to adopt a Chihuahua if you have small children that would treat your pup like a toy. Not all breeds are good for all family dynamics.
The Chihuahua is recognized as the smallest breed of dog, normally weighing up to 6 lbs. Size can vary and is not normally an issue unless you are choosing a Chihuahua as a show dog. This little dog makes the best pet for single adults or families with older children since they can be fragile and easily get hurt, dropped and more.
Some Chihuahuas can have temperamental issues because of their size. I have two that love everyone but some are fearful of strangers. They are, however, very close to their families and can be very protective. Despite their “nippy” reputation, they can be been trained to be very friendly, loving and cuddly with others. It takes a lot of spoiling, babying them, nurturing and tenderness for you to get a very affectionate pet. When choosing your Chihuahua, ask to see the parents of the litter and their dispositions which can give you a little hint on the bloodlines and characteristics of your new baby.
The Chihuahua is very bright and intelligent although quite a challenge to train. They have better things to do, leaving them with a short attention span. However, they are very smart and may just need a little more patience on your part in training your Chihuahua.
One downfall for many is the fact that this little dog loves hearing itself, looking for things to bark at. They can be difficult to housebreak at times and have occasional accidents in the home. They tend to shiver since they are always cold and love to burrow under blankets for warmth.
Many people are not aware how intelligent, charming and witty the Chihuahua can be, making a wonderful addition to the family. For a healthy puppy, be sure to choose a quality breeder with a health guarantee in writing as well as shot records and de-worming. You want to be sure the puppy is protected from the deadly parvovirus that affects many puppies.
If you are looking for an adorable little lapdog, the Chihuahua makes a great companion, bold, saucy, loyal and very affectionate. They get along well with other pets within the family as well.
