Purpose of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

Many homeless animals become faithful pets that live their entire lives in a loving household; however, many other homeless pets are not so fortunate. That is where the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) steps in.

The ASPCA has been around since the 1800s. Originally founded in New York City, the ASPCA has expanded throughout the United States as a national organization. This organization’s mission is to stop animal cruelty in America.

The ASPCA is made up of three groups. These groups reach out to the community, service the health of animals, and create initiatives against cruelty to animals. The community outreach group reaches out to the community by establishing meetings, writing reports, and publishing newsletters; communicating and collaborating with various communities throughout the United States; places as many animals as possible in new homes through the ASPCA Onyx and Breezy Shefts Adoption Center; provides various educational programs throughout the country; and collaborates with veterinarians who work with animals at the shelter.

The anti-cruelty group has seven departments that address issues and tasks that include field investigations, forensics, projects, rehabilitation of animals with behavioral problems, involving the government in bringing awareness of animal welfare issues to the public, providing legal assistance, and engaging in anti-cruelty campaigns.

The ASPCA’s adoption center in New York requires new adopters to be at least 21 years old, have two forms of identification, have personal references, and to have a suitable place for the pet to live. The ASPCA representatives check prospective adopters’ homes and require them to fill out applications.

Many of these animals get adopted into loving forever homes. The ASPCA’s success stories can be seen on their blog site.
