Purl Wax: the green way to prepare for spring snow conditions in Colorado

Yesterday it was 55 degrees and bluebird; today it's in the mid-teens and dumping.  Using the proper wax this time of year can mean the difference between touching down smoothly on tranny and knuckling your way into the hospital; or between slashing powder and straightlining it just to make it back to the lift.  Read on for your dose of wax nerdery.

Purl Wax is a Colorado-based company offering a host of killer waxes that are not only non-toxic and biodegradable but are also ridiculously fast.  They have also partnered up with some grass roots snowboard outfits like Venture and Unity, both based in Colorado as well.  Support local snowboarding!

The guys at Satellite Board Shop in Boulder recommend combining waxes in order to be prepared for the diverse snow conditions found on the Front Range: start with a good all temperature wax down the middle and finish with a low temperature wax down the sides.  The low temp wax is harder and lasts longer when applied to the high-wear areas of a snowboard.  It is also well suited to the snow we get here in Colorado which tends to have a super low moisture content.

For those uber-warm days when you know it's going to be slushy, you should still run low temp wax on the edges but using a dedicated warm weather wax down the middle is also imperative.  Don't be afraid to experiment with some of the different wax offerings to see what works best for your style of riding.

There are some who are skeptical about the new breed of eco-friendly waxes like Purl's but one ride is all it takes to be convinced.  These waxes are legit and offer one small way that the snowboard community can help to offset our monstrous carbon footprints.   Head over to your local shop to check 'em out.

Special thanks to J.G. at Satellite Board shop for the lowdown.
