Purina helps Cat Care Society and seniors with Pets for People program

The Cat Care Society of Lakewood has joined with Purina pet foods to help seniors adopt cats. It’s a win-win-win! Anyone over 55 can download a coupon from Purina, present it at the shelter and get a free feline forever friend. Purina then reimburses the shelter for the adoption. It’s that simple, however, time is running out for the program.

For the past few months, Purina has partnered with animal shelters across the country for its Pets for People grant program. Anyone 55 and over qualifies for a free, Purina-funded cat or dog adoption from one of the programs participating shelter. Simply print this coupon from the website and present it at the shelter. To see a list of shelter across the country, visit Purina's Pet Adoption Program website. However, time is limited because the program expires December 31, 2013.

Many scientific studies have proven the beneficial effects of pet ownership, especially for seniors. Pets help prevent and treat stress and provide better psychological sense of wellbeing for those who share their lives with a pet. Seniors with pets have more social interactions, get more exercise and have fewer health problems. Cat Care Society also would like to remind seniors cats make great pets as they require no daily walks and generally don’t weigh much, averaging anywhere from 8-18 pounds making them easier to care for.

The Cat Care Society would also like to let people know the shelter could use some extra donations this time of year. Presently, the shelter could use donations of cat litter (clay or clumping) and canned cat food (no fish flavors please). Visit the shelter at 5787 W. 6th Avenue in Lakewood to find a new forever friend for Christmas.
