Purina ends urine test for diabetic cats

Purina has stopped making Glucotest, a urinary glucose detection system for diabetic cats, due to “limited demand and distribution,” a company spokesman said Dec. 20.

“Cat owners are encouraged to talk with their veterinarian regarding questions about feline diabetes or other health concerns,” the spokesman, Bill Salzman, told Examiner.com in an e-mail.

Like human diabetes, feline diabetes is a treatable disease that occurs when a cat has high blood sugar. The Purina test allowed cat owners to monitor their diabetic cats at home. A packet of Glucotest particles was mixed with a cat’s litter, and a color change would indicate the glucose level of the cat's urine.

But New York City veterinarian Mark Peterson, an expert in feline diabetes, indicated in the blog “Insights into Veterinary Endocrinology” that here has been a shift in recent years toward at-home blood glucose monitoring, which is more accurate.

“This trend away from the use of urine glucose monitoring is probably one reason Purina Veterinary Diagnostics decided to stop making this urinary glucose detection system,” Peterson wrote.
