The latest pet food recall is hitting the news this morning, but this one should not affect upstate NY cats. Nestle Purina announced a voluntary recall of Cat Chow Naturals Dry and Friskies Grillers Blend Dry cat foods due to potential Salmonella contamination.
According to the FDA statement, there have been no complaints from any cat owners and no reports of cat illness. Salmonella can cause vomiting, diarrhea and fever. It is possible to spread Salmonella back and forth between people and pets.
The potentially contaminated foods were only distributed to Oregon, Washington and Idaho. If you are traveling out that way in your RV and taking your cats, plan to bring food purchased here in the Utica/Rome area. Bags from the prime areas will be removed as soon as possible but you don't want to take any chances.
The recall notice did not expect bags of these foods to be found outside those states, but if you want to check your latest cat food purchases, the following are the suspect lots:

This is a good reminder that if you repackage your dry foods when you get them home into airtight containers you should keep the package information, simply cut out the production codes and "Best By" date information. You could even stick this on the refrigerator with a magnet to have it handy.
