“Even though Mother Nature has blessed Purgatory with great snowfall thus far, it’s not enough to carry us through the entire season. The mountain operations crew needs to continue to prep the mountain and ensure we have adequate coverage to get us through spring conditions,” said Mike McCormack, senior vice president of mountain operations. “The goal of the mountain crew is to open Purgatory for daily operations, seven days a week, starting on Dec. 6. With Mother Nature’s cooperation, Purgatory’s crew will make additional snow to cover terrain on the backside in order to open additional trails and Lift 3.”
Purgatory reports more than five feet of snow has fallen on the mountain so far, with around 30 inches of that total falling last weekend. For its weekend opening Purgatory will have top-to-bottom skiing on the front side of the mountain. All of the front side terrain and the Pitchfork Terrain Park will be open, excepting Ambassadors’ Glade, accessed by Lift 1 and Lift 2.
Lifts will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Discounted lift tickets are available Friday through Sunday: $55 for adults, $43 for young adults (13-17 years), $47 for seniors (65-79), $33 for kids (6-12), and $21 for super seniors (80+). Purgatory season passes, including weekday passes will be honored Friday through Sunday for the next two weeks.
“These are some of the best opening conditions I can remember, and our signature steeps such as Styx and Lower Hades will be open, which is not typical on opening day,” said Sven Brunso, vice president of sales and marketing at Durango Mountain Resort. “Purgatory couldn’t have scripted a better scenario of multiple storms this fall with high moisture content, making for a great start to the season.”
Season Kick-Off events tomorrow include a Bluegrass jam band in Purgy’s and beer specials from Steamworks. On Saturday there will be drink specials on Purgatory Beach with sponsor, Standard Distributing, from 2-5 p.m.
This weekend, Purgy’s Restaurant will be open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. for lunch, après ski and dinner (on Sunday, Purgy’s is open until 4:30 p.m.) and Purgy’s Coffee Kiosk will be open at 8 a.m. Village Market and Deli hours will be 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Shops in Purgatory Village Plaza will also be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., offering sales to kick off the season at Purgatory Sports and Alpine Chic. Snowmobile Adventures are offering tours all weekend. Call 970-385-2141 for more info.
