The Purdue women’s basketball team remains in first place in the Big Ten standings thanks to Sunday’s 77-66 win over Illinois.
Purdue (19-5, 9-2) was aided by Sam Ostarello’s double-double, her third of the season. Ostarello had a career-high 21 points and collected 13 rebounds.
The Boilermakers trailed 14-7 at the 10:36 mark of the first half, but rallied to outscore the Illini 26- 14 from there and take a 33-28 halftime lead.
Illinois would get as close as four points at 62-58 with 7:03 remaining in the game, but would get no closer.
The Boilermakers made 7-of-8 free throw attempts in the game’s closing minutes to seal the victory.
Sophomore Courtney Moses was a perfect 10-of-10 at the free throw line in the game. Moses has now connected on 31 straight free throw opportunities.
“I was just real proud of this group because of the resiliency and fight-back,” Purdue head coach Sharon Versyp said.
Sunday afternoon’s game was the Boilers first since its triple overtime loss to Nebraska last Thursday.
“We were not as fatigued as I thought we might be and we continue to work on that mental toughness that our group has,” Versyp added.
For the game, Purdue nailed 21-of-29 (72.4%) of its free throws and outrebounded the Illini, 44-32.
