It is worth it to check out the discount carts and racks at all the stores you visit. Especially the grocery store. Doing so allows me to live a more frugal life.
Many people believe that you cannot do anything with the over ripe or almost expired foods that you find at the discount rates in the grocery store. In fact, you can save a great deal of money purchasing these items on a regular basis.
The Bangor area has a few stores where you can shop clearance racks and carts for food. try Walmart and Hannaford.
Try some of the ideas below and see how much you can save on your weekly food bill:
Over ripe bananas can be used to make homemade banana bread and banana chocolate chip muffins. Both of these items are delectable just out of the oven, and can be cooled and frozen for future use.
Carrots and zucchini are also good choices for breads and muffins, as well as cakes.
Apples with bad parts can be used to make homemade applesauce. Cut out the bad parts, peel and core. Then cook down for a hot treat. Pears are another good fruit for this.
Anything that can be frozen, including breads, cheeses and sandwich meats, can be purchased at discount prices days before expiration. Freeze them until ready to use.
Off brand bottled or canned sodas and iced teas are often placed in carts and sold for under .50 each. You can purchase one to try, then more if you like them. These are great for once-in-a-while treats.
Almost expired pastries make great desserts if you know you will eat them within in a day or two.
